I'm having a big problem with being unable to change a signal to green, I've managed to do it a couple of times, but I'm not sure of the exact procedure for this, can anyone enlighten me?

You're going to have to provide a little more information than that - like Sim, version, signal, other trains etc. What would be most helpful is a screenshot.

I'm on Exeter V2.227, it's happening at most signals, it's happened with 1 2 or 3 trains in the control area.

Click on a signal. Then click on the next signal along in the direction you want the train to travel in, and a route will be set. If the route is at a junction, the signal might not clear until the train gets near to it, in order to make sure the train slows down and doesn't take a (for example) 20MPH turnout at the speed of the main line.

If you're setting a route over a level crossing (shown by thin orange lines between the tracks), make sure the crossing has been lowered and the 'clear' button has been pressed.

Hope this helps!

Hi Temple Meads

I recall having a similar problem recently with both Bristol and Exeter and posted it here.

In the helpful discussion that followed, what I thought was a common problem turned out to be two separate issues. If you follow that thread it may help you with yours.

I've now downloaded Royston and I'm managing fine with that, I'll go back to the bigger ones when I'm expierienced with this.

TempleMeads, couple of things you might want to do (if you haven't already).
1) On the Control tab of the options form (press F3 to access), uncheck "Right-click cancels routes". You get a menu when you right click on a signal instead which will include a cancel route option but more importantly it shows you the signal number.
2) On the Display tab of the same form, make sure the "show all shunt signals" is checked. You'll need this on even on Royston for doing shunting moves.
3) On the Display tab of the same form, make sure the "show panel signals" is not checked. You''l only ever see red and green aspects for signals otherwise.

I also prefer to see the track circuit breaks as well so I also check the "Show track Circuit breaks" option as well but that's personal preference.
