Level Crossing (penalty) 18/11/2011 at 21:04 #23247

Running a rather busy timetable (ProjectX) I am leaving the barriers down at stoke cannon for several trains.

Reading the wiki it suggests that it doesn't matter how long you leave barriers down for as long as trains are passing, yet I have been receiving penalties within less than a minute of a train crossing (generally about 10 mins after first lowering the barriers), it seems the timer is not being reset properly.

Anyone else noticed this ? (exeter 2.227.0.0)

Regards
Alan

The wiki says
Quote:
Please note that the penalty system only kicks in IF the barriers are left down WITHOUT a train passing; it has nothing to do with the amount of time the barriers are down. For example, leaving the barriers down for a succession of 3 trains within 10 minutes won’t incur a penalty. But lower the barriers 10 minutes before the first train arrives and you will be penalised.

This is not my experience - I seem to get a penalty after about 10 minutes, even if 3 or more trains have gone by in that time. The way I read it is that the timer should reset after every train passes; is this interpretation incorrect ?

I think the WIKI may be slightly incorrect (or out-dated).
There appears to be 2 penalties that occur in my experience:-
a) a penalty for having the barriers down without any train passing (somewhere between 4 and 7 mins according to the simulation and the developer's choice);
b) a second penalty if the barriers are down continuously for a longer period, even with trains passing within the timespan in a), say 3 or 4 trains' worth.

The messages are on the lines of:
a) "barriers down with no train approaching";
b) "excessive delay to road users".

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Can't see it myself

All it says is
"In modern timetables, Silk Mill level crossing does not exist and so must be lowered, cleared, and have reminders placed on it for the duration of the game, no penalty is incurred"

Peter, I'm reading http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=73 {edit} - sorry, correct link should be http://www.SimSig.co.uk/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=usertrack:ssterms:lcs - forgot to open in new tab

Andy, thanks for your message, that is probably what is happening.

{edit} Yes I have just had both messages "excessive delay without a train" and "excessive delay to road users"

Cheers
Alan

There are two possible penalties for full barrier (or gated) crossings:
(1) barriers down too long
(2) barriers down too long without a train.

Which ones apply to a given crossing, and how long "too long" is, is decided by the simulation developer on a per-crossing basis.

Sorry misunderstood what you were cross-referring to - see postings by Andy and Clive.

For info the respective times are no train 720s and with train 900s

Thanks both, that explains it perfectly; it was my misunderstanding that the barriers could stay down all the time as long as trains were passing! I think the level crossing wiki article needs re-wording as it does say Quote:
Please note that the penalty system only kicks in IF the barriers are left down WITHOUT a train passing; it has nothing to do with the amount of time the barriers are down.
because as we see it does kick in if the barriers are down with trains passing as well, just that one has more time!

Cheers
Alan

Are these times generic or Exeter-specific?

They are generic to any Sim that I've coded them in (though as always there may be exceptions e.g.Silk Mill)- which are currently SwinDid, Exeter, Westbury, Edinburgh, CSCOT.

Thanks- could this info be added to the Wiki? (I've already changed the entries for Exeter, Edinburgh and CScot, and SwinDid and Westbury don't have any crossings of this type)

Indeed it could....The wiki is a resource by everyone for everyone after all and anyone free to contribute to it. In fact we'd encourage it!! You could do it yourself which after re-reading your post, you may already have done in which case, thanks for contributing.

Sorry, I meant add the information for all Sims- I've done the ones listed above, but I assumed values are different in Sims developed by someone else?

If we are talking about CCTV type then Edinburgh has 2 and CSCOT 1 always and 3? in Alloa Mode. Westbury's ones are gate boxes so although they work from the same module there is no user interaction and no delays so don't count.

To re-phrase: I have added the information Peter gave to the Exeter, CScot and Edinburgh maunuals, for CCTV crossings. I have not done anything for Westbury or SwinDid, because they do not have CCTV crossings. I was wondering if the time limits used on all the Sims not mentioned above could be added to the relevent manuals, since I assume diffrent time limits are used on different sims.

Sorry if I've confused anyone.

Specific to each crossing, with the time set by the developer.
