Since yesterday February 3, 2010, all 4 billion IP's in the world have been assigned to a regional registry. In 1979 people thought this would be enough for the whole world, but it isn't. It is likely that ISP's are going to use the IPv6 system capable of giving every grain of sand on earth an unique IP.
Most ISP's are still having some free IP's for their customers, and the regional registries are still having some IP pools for ISP's, but it draws to an end.
After 12 years of work, June 8, 2011, is going to be World IPv6 Testing Day: Microsoft and Google and much more great businesses are going to switch their servers to IPv6 for one day.
They are going to be IPv6-compatible, but is SimSig also? Can we still play our multiplayer games with the new internet system? Or do the sims (or core code) have to be edited, which means sims that won't be developed anymore, cannot be played when the new system has taken over the IPv4?

IPv4 will be around for a long time yet but as yet it is unclear what changes will need to be made to SimSig to support it - it relies on the lower level Delphi and Windows SDK to ultimately handle the networking issues.

Hmmm, I will have to test this, I have IPv6 on my Desktop and my laptop, once I figure out port forwarding I'll give it a shot!

Also not all 4 billion IPs have gone to RIRs, a fair few blocks are reserved for other things.

Hardly any need for panic. Noting that the green parts are now all allocated (almost certainly all fairly publically), see how many massive blocks are owned by companies/governments:

Boeing, US Post Service, IBM, HP, Apple, etc. all own massive IP allocations - and between NAT (putting multiple computers behind one IP) and companies willing to pay enough to buy the allocations off those companies, it's not the end of the world.

Plus to the best of my knowledge, XP doesn't support IPv6 natively - your ISP is hardly going to be jumping at the chance to lose half its customers.

According to the Microsoft web-site, operating systems from XP onwards support IPv6 using MS technology - although you may need to turn the functionality on. Have a look here. There are other resources available on the Internet for those who wish to implement the IPv6 protocol on earlier versions of Windows.

I can't see any of the major companies letting go of their allocations, and I don't see NAT being a plausible solution either. IPv6 needs to be implemented within a reasonable timespan.

Once I figure out how to get IPv6 port forwarding going I will run some tests and see what happens.
