Saltley 1995-1996 Timetable General Description.

Here is a brief overview of the timetable.

Saltley PSB controls the diesel lines that radiate around the Birmingham New Street area. This timetable represents traffic that ran during 1995-1996.
Passenger & Parcels Train Services taken from Section CC WTT 24th September, 1995 to 01st June, 1996 Chesterfield to Barnt Green. Section CG WTT 24th September, 1995 to 01st June, 1996 Marylebone to Birmingham & Stratford Upon Avon to Birmingham. Additional information regarding RES services taken from RES Train service Guide.
Freight Train services taken from Railtrack Midlands WTT 19th November, 1995 to 13th January, 1996 Derby to Barnt Green & Branches, West Midlands Area, Heyford to Bordesley & Branches, Rugby to Stafford via Bescot. Additional Freight Trains Services taken from WCML(south) & West Midlands Trip Notice.
Composition & train lengths taken from East Midalnds Freight train loads book 1990 & Trainload freight loads book (East) 1993, Railtrack Midlands zone freight trains loads book commencing 14/01/96 & Railtrack LNE zone freight trains loads book commencing December 1996.
Additional information taken from Working Manual for Rail Staff 1989 & December 2003.
Train Headcodes.
Freight train headcodes usually end in a letter which denotes the freight train company responsible for running that service.
W – Trainload Freight West – Transrail
M – Trainload Freight South East – Mainline Freight
L – Trainload Freight North East – Loadhaul
D – Railfreight Distribution
F – Freightliner ‘95
R – Rail Express Systems
Train headcodes with ‘T’ in it are Trip workings (eg xTxx)
LSFP – these headcodes represent Lawley Street Freightliner Pilot.
TYDS – these headcodes represent Tyseley Depot Shunts.
MGR services.
MGR coal trains from the east midlands coalfields are worked by Cl.60s with sets of 38 MGR wagons & as they are Cl.60 hauled no banker at Cam Hill is required. Loaded MGR trains from Daw Mill Colliery worked by Cl.56s or Cl.58s are sets of 32 MGR wagons.
Freight Train Operations.
Landor Street is the busiest relieving point for traincrew working freight trains on the network. Whilst most of the trains in the WTTs used show the majority of freight trains running via the min line (ML), in reality this may work once the passenger traffic subsides, but I suggest due to high amount of freight traffic in this timetable freight trains are routed via the Down Goods at either Castle Bromwich Junction or Washwood Heath No.1. There is an abundance of slot requests on whoever works the Centre panel for freight trains destined for either Washwood Heath sidings or Lawley Street FLT.
Passenger Train Operations.
The passenger train operations get quite manic during the morning & evening peak periods. The reversing siding at Longbridge will cater for 2 or 3 units on top of each other. There is a point in the evening peak where there are 3 separate ECS services from Soho Depot. 2 of these go into Longbridge reversing siding & the other reverses at Barnt Green platform 4,so watch out for those.
1M80R is a charter train to Stratford Upon Avon & requires a run round at Dorridge. Can’t think of anything else to add right now except keep checking the routing of the trains on the panel as some of routes vary from the norm.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darren Goble for his excellent effort in creating this sim & to Joe Chandler(jc92) & Chris(Derbybest) for their assistance in thwe testing process. To everyone else who plays this timetable whether on your own or during a multi-play session, I hope you enjoy it as much as Darren & the testers have.
Be warned this timetable gets exetremely busy

Good Luck.

Thanks for the timetable 58050. Having a good time playing it. I've noticed a rule that has been missed out as 6O58D entered from Washwood Heath Up Sidings before 0O58D the loco to work it appeared from Saltley LIP.

Yes I noticed that this afternoon whilst watching AF hosting the timetable. I suspect the easiest way round that is for each individual person who downloads this timetable to add it in themselves. But thanks for letting me know.

Have added missing rule, and replaced file download in same location.

Edit: Also moved to (new) Saltley Timetables container.

LSFP3 (Cl08 pilot) appears to be 118m long? Or incorrect description?

I've just checked the timetable & it's a Cl.08+5 x loaded FSAs. Cl.08 refers to the loco type & the term 'Lawley Street Pilot' is the therm used in the Trip Notice.

Glad you like it, we aim to please. Good luck if you are solo I know what its like when I was testing it. Best I achieved was x1.3 on speed anything more was getting a bit too much at times.

Moonraker, this is a difficult timetable to run on your own. I know from testing it. However the easiest way to deal with things is to slow the sim down a bit. Like I mentioned in an earlier post the quickest I could run at was x1.3 speed. As I worked on this are that helped, but for anyone who is new to this area they would struggle. Not wanting to put people off from downloading & playing this timetable it is really busy & inless you are a well seasoned SimSigger then you would start to struggle after 0600.
That said I tend to think this timetable is better for multi-play & the 2009 timetable supplied with the sim has about 112 more trains in it, but there is probably more freight & shunting in this timetable. When playing this timetable in multi-play whoever gets assigned to 'Centre' panel really needs to know what they are doing as blockages will soon build up in view off the high number of freight trains requiring traincrew relief at Landor Street in both directions & he has to regulate closely with the person on the 'North' panel. When playing I tend to run freight on the mainline towards Landor Streetm but cross them over onto the Goods line at Washwood Heath No.1 & once the passenger traffic starts I send all the freights onto the Goods line at Castle Bromwich Jn, where you can hold an early running freights so they don't stand at landor Street for any length of time. The area has a very heavy volume of traffic in view of the fact that Birmingham being the 2nd largest city has a high density of commuter traffic & the freight traffic is heavy due to it close proximity to Bescot & the traffic into & out of Washwood Heath & the other local yards at Bordesley. For those who like busy timetables this one is a must, but I know it can get frustrated when you are playing on your own & you get over-whelmed with trains. Maybe timetable writers in future can grade timetables based on the number of trains in them if the SimSig management create a variable scale whereby anyone wishing to download a timetable can check the grading of the timetable so they have an idea of how busy the timetable is likely to be if they are quite conversant with the area. My apologies to anyone who has download this timetable & found it too busy tio play on their own, but that's the way of it unfortunately.

Half-past six in the morning is as far as I got before I had to slow the sim down. Hard but enjoyably so.

Takes me back to my Oxford days when I was still driving. Signed Stratford on Avon and Tyseley when we had a scud (158) on hire from Central Trains for the Oxford - Bristol services.

I thought a scud was a 153?

A nickname picked up from Worcester men I believe when they still worked to Oxford on the North Cotswolds. Apparently because they could (And usually did) break down anywhere. A mate of mine failed with one right across Wootton Bassett Junction on the up road coming back from Bristol which caused a bit of a kerfuffle

Im upto 1120 on this timetable and really enjoying it but im laying it on normal speed, it gets a bit hairy at times.

Cracking timetable tho its got a bit of everything.

Matt

ps i was under the impression that 155/158s were scuds and that 153s were skateboards.

Hi I'm up to around 8am (fantastic TT Pascal) but have found trouble with 9T23 From Tyseley Depot going to Caledonia Yard. I've called the yard for the slot which they say has been given but the indicator light hasn't changed to white. I know the ground frame is involved at some point during the move but wasn't too sure when as this bit isn't in the manual on the Wiki page.

I know the probs are with my signalling rather than the TT itself. Any tips please!

Tim

Scuds was also a nickname goven to Cl.60s when they first came into service as they could fail anytime/anywhere. Now known as Donuts or Tugs.

I've only got to 01:30 so far but it looks a cracking piece of work. Thanks for putting all the effort in.

I see you haven't been really nasty (or at least not as far as I have seen to this point). All of the Landor St crew changes I have seen so far are set as a through line stop and the trains have whistled up as soon as they been stood long enough for the change to take place. If you set the departure times as fixed (XX:XX rather than XXtXX) you then get a random effect where some trains whistle up even if they are 30 early and others sit until the due dep. time blocking the line (and if they are a long Up train they also block St. Andrews Jn). Now that does force you to regulate very carefully with Northbound trains sitting on the Slow at Cofton or in Bordesley DGL and Southbounds in the Down Through Siding at Washwood Heath until you dare call them forward!

Yes Postal thats part of the fun with this timetable, regulating the freights accordingly. However in the real world trains from the south would stand either in the loop at Bordesley or on the Goods at Longbridge until the driver whois booked to work the train forward rings the signaller on Centre panel to tell him he has booked on & waiting to relief whatever train he is booked to relieve. Then the train would be sent towards Landor Street. Trains from the north would go onto the Goods at Castle Bromwich & be held at Washwood Heath No.1 until the forward driver had contacted the box. It's a bit vague as to which method would simulate the best in the sense of either a 'Through Line Stop' or just entering an arrival/Departure time for Landor Street. Using both may make it a bit more challenging.
