Hello all,

I am currently working on an Exeter 1990 Summer Saturday T/T and have hit a bit of a wall.

Can anyone help with the consists of 1V33 2125 Edinburgh-Penzance & 1S19 1730 Penzance-Edinburgh please?

I know they were 47 hauled but thats all I can deduce.

Thanks in advance

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

On July 11, 1983 the London – Penzance sleeper service was relaunched with its new 'Night Riviera' name which was designed to complement the long-established daytime Cornish Riviera. New Mark 3 air-conditioned sleeping cars were introduced on this service which incorporated many new safety features that had been lacking in the Mark 1 cars that had caught fire at Taunton a few years before.[7] These were the first on the route to feature controlled emission toilets and so discharge facilities had to be provided at Penzance TMD and Laira TMD in Plymouth where the coaches were serviced,
Quote from wikipedia. Implies the formation hasn't changed much since 1983.

The original poster is talking about the (sadly now discontinued) Scotland-Cornwall services rather than the London-Cornwall.

I travelled on this in (about) September 1992 and the only thing of relevance I can recall is that it was definitely Mk3 coaches. I do remember going via the Bordesley loop on leaving Birmingham, which the steward told me was done to avoid disorienting passengers by a change of direction. Not a nicety whch today's Caledonian sleepers bother about! I'm also pretty sure the service actually started and finished in Glasgow, travelling via Edinburgh.

I might be able to give you the correct information you want. Looking at my station working book for Birmingham New Street Summer Saturdays until 29th September, 1990, both trains call at New Street.
1S19 2105 Plymouth - Edinburgh listed in the book as Inter-City Sleeper. The train is shown to arrive at New Street at 0109h with 10 vehicles. These would be Mk.3 sleepers & Mk.2D/E/Fs as day coaches & a couple of BGs in the formation, hauled as you say by a Cl.47/4 diesel.
1V33 2125 Edinburgh - Penzance shown in the book as Inter-City Holidaymaker conveys 12 vehicles with a Cl.47/4 diesel loco. Again if sleepers are conveyed on the train they will be Mk.3s & Mk.2D/E/Fs as day coaches & a couple of BGs.
The lengths of all the rolling stock can be foundon 'The Railway Centre' website. BGs= 17.27m, Mk.2 = 20m & Mk.3 = 22.73m, Cl.47s are 19.38m.
I caught 1S19 several times during the 1980s when it started from Bristol Temple Meads, as it was the only passenger train booked to be banked up the Lickey Incline with a pair of Cl.37/0s, so riding in the rear coach was best. Hope this helps.

In the 1980s the train split at Carstairs. The rear portion going to Edinburgh Waverley.

Thanks 58050, much appreciated.

I have compiled a spreadsheet on Excel as an "A&D" book for Exeter to work from. Would it be OK if I sent you a copy for you to peruse and make any changes if required?

Some of the information (namely the traffic to/from Paddington) is taken from my Saturdays book for Paddington & Old Oak Common, as well as perusing a number of useful video's on the Youtube.

Yes you can, my station working books got Paddington are Mondays - Fridays 1988-1989 & 1989-1990. The other book I've got is a Sunday one for 1991. That said the train formations should be virtually the same. When I rode on the Night Riviera from mid 1980s(1985) to the late 1980s it always had a Cl.31/4 piloting the Cl.50 over the South Devon Banks. Not sure when that finished, but the Cl.31/4 was removed from the train at Exeter St. Davids. I've got some photos of 31404 at Exeter St. Davids agter it came off the sleeper which I caught from Newton Abbott. 31404 then went onto the Barnstable passenger turn at St. Davids & the Cl.50 continued on its own to Paddington. But by all means send me the document & I'll go through it Dibbs.

In the summer it ran as two trains pretty close behind each other, in fact I think at one point they leapfrogged each other.

I seem to remember it being diverted through Worcester on a Sunday morning periodically in the 80s (I saw a photo the other day). It was usually a pair of 50s then because the ETH limit was overloaded with 1, I think it may have run to 14 coaches at that point, but the sleepers would have come off at BTM.
