Hi,
Why do Sapperton tunnels have lights showing whether or not they are clear?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it is to allow the signaller, in the event of a failed train, to be sure whether the failure is inside the tunnel or not, since different recovery procedures are required. That may well be tosh - my memory isn't the most reliable instrument these days! Hopefully others with more detailed knowledge will also respond.

This feature is also in operation at Stansted, which is a single line tunnel, but I can't remember the reason.
