Exeter Summer 2006 v2.222

1L20 (previously 5L20) arrives at Platform 1 from Exeter Yard. Its timetable directs it to move to Platform 2, OK since the line at Platform 1 is reversible (RVL). From there it departs for Exmouth Jn and Pinhoe.

This is odd because as you see, there is no exit to Exmouth from P2, only from P1. Its TT does not say that P2 is reversible, though on looking at the panel it obviously is, too (a running signal facing Up Main).

Common sense suggests that 1L20 should depart from P1 without being scheduled to go to P2. If P1 has an exit route to Exmouth, why does the train need to go to P2 at all?

And if it does go to P2, why isn't P1 mentioned a second time as a waypoint (not necessarily a stop) on its journey to Exmouth? I can't see any other way for it to get there without passing through P1 a second time.

Advice appreciated, thanks.

The P2 location is Exeter Central, not Exeter St Davids.
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

'RVL' refers to the Reversible (as opposed to Up) line between St Davids and Central, then to platform 2 at the latter (I don't know why - perhaps it's booked that way for passenger convenience since there's nothing else about). There's no reference to platform 2 at St Davids - I think you've confused yourself there!

The 'Line' column (the coumn with RVL in), refers to the route the train is booked to take away from a location, not a property of a platform.

you need to read the timetable again. or go and get your eyes tested.
it clearly says between the locations of Exeter St Davids (top line) and Exmouth Jn (3rd line) Exeter central

There's no need for that. People make mistakes - I know I've made some, and I'm sure you have as well.

Thanks for putting me straight - I didn't notice Exeter Central was a separate station, yet it was staring me in the face!

As Steamer says, the Down Waterloo line between Exeter St Davids P3 and Exeter P2 is clearly marked "RVL" (though one parallel to it, marked "Incline" isn't).

Appreciated.

Only the one line is reversible - the other line is unidirectional.

Scope for landing oneself in a pickle here - I did it when learning Exeter (which is a delightfully subtle panel - more so than it appears as first sight).

Definitely best to read carefully between Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central plus the platforms that each service that runs between both stations will use and as such deduse which lines can/must be used.

You'll get there maxand! First try on Exeter?

Nil.

Yes - I'm wearing out the Pause button.

Joking aside, this is a great sim. Thanks to all who helped create it.

I also enjoy Exeter, in fact halfway though the sim now, but prefer Bristol.
