hi all,

What a fab sim but have a prob with the crossing at Barton Lane.

Ive got the auto lower feature on but when trains approach nothing happens and the train stops at T4. this also happens when trains come from the other direction and stop at T5 and the crossing has to manually lowered.

after train has then has gone onto Barton branch the crossing then auto lowers for no reason ?? how odd

Am I right in thinking that I read or heard somewhere that Auto Lower does not work for CCTV Crossings?

But you need to lower only CCTV crossings, so Auto Lower not working for them seems a bit strange (haven't tried it though).
Edit: There's another strange thing about Barton Lane/Thornton Abbey.
According to the layout as it is displayed, first you've got the distant signal/repeater T3R, then the station platform, then signal T4, and finally the level crossing. This doesn't fit together with the status messages in the train list.
If I leave the barriers up, first I've got the train standing at red signal T4. If I then close the barriers, and clear the signal, the train proceeds, but the signal remains off and then the train stops at Thornton Abbey. Only after having departed from Thornton Abbey the train crosses over into the next track circuit, which lets the signal fall back to danger.

There is a bug with the auto lower on Barton Road. This has already been noted and fixed for the next release.

Ohhh...and you have the option of turning off or on auto raise and auto lower. If TORR is turned off, auto raise will be disabled exept on those crossing which in reality are CCTV....aka those around Grimsby Town, Western Entrance (Immingham), Haxey and Beckingham (I think thats all of them off the top of my head) which have auto raise on all the time and with the routes over them TORR regardless of the sim setting or at least should but I note that some may not (another bug fixed for the next release).

As above CCTV crossings (for real) are generally non-auto lower but there are exception as always.around the network. However, as Lardy says, auto-lower may be made available in certain circumstances within Sims. E.g. in Edinburgh it's available if the relevant ARS sub-area is live.

I'm not aware of any crossing which has auto-clear.

Not yet to be sure - Crossing Clear in real life is a signalman looking at the crossing (on CCTV) and confirming there's nowt inside the barriers (but I'm sure you knew that). I believe there are trials going on with a radar system with a view to creating an auto-clear function; AIUI such a system already exists in Germany (or is it the Netherlands?) and I think I'm right in saying Everton Xing (P'boro Sim) was a test site.

In Germany definitively (the white 'egg' next to the right track beyond the street), I don't know about the Netherlands, though, but AFAIK nearly all level crossings in there are AHB or AOC style crossings, and full-barrier crossings are quite rare.

Regarding my query about the signal location at Thornton Abbey, Google shows the signal as being positioned between the platform and the crossing, so the current simulation behaviour doesn't quite fit.

The sequence you mention is correct and the on-screen layout is per your description and the image. I'll take at look at signal and platform positions though as maybe their location needs a tad of tweak.

It's called an MCB-OD crossing. See, for example, http://www.rssb.co.uk/sitecollectiondocuments/pdf/reports/research/T729_rpt_final.pdf

I have a vague memory of reading somewhere that one had just been installed for real (not the Everton or Filey trials).

On the subject of Barton Lane, is it right prototypically that signal T4 must clear (and hence Barton Lane must be down) before a train can enter Thornton Abbey station in the Down direction?

When auto-lower is on Barton Lane barriers lower periodically for no apparent reason usually as a train passes Barrow road, possibly the crossing keeper drinking?

Just confirmed that Barton Lane autolowers when the train strikes in for Barrow Road in either direction.

I found it only occurs in the down direction.

Incidently, the direction labelling on the panel for Barton-On-Humber single line section is incorrect.

The directions on the single line to Barton are correct as per Sectional App. Getting it correct to real life caused Chris a lot of grief in testing too!

The Sectional Appendix is the official Network Rail document, whereas Quail is drawn by a separate company. The directions shown in the Sectional Appendix are those used in the sim.

Therefore, there is a direction change between Ulceby and Barton. This caused untold pain and suffering in the developing and testing process trying to get it to work correctly.

You can download Network Rail Baseline Capability Documents which are derived from the Sectional Appendices at this address. The Barton branch is in the London North Eastern / Midland & Continental section on pages 294 and 295 . Because of the triangular junction at Ulceby/Brocklesby/Habrough some trains are bound to face a transition from travelling in the Up direction to travelling in the Down and vice versa.

If you do want to download or examine, please be aware that the London North Eastern / Midland & Continental document is the largest of the downloads at 235Mb. The others vary from 85Mb to 200Mb.

I know that its been about 4 years since I left the area for pastures new, but I find it hard to believe that Network Rail had actually spent money on converting Barton Lane to a CCTV crossing.

In my days in the Immingham area, Barton Lane was a level crossing controled by a crossing keeper. Although not a block post, the crossing keeper had a Distant and a Stop signal on the Down approach. Returning from Barton on the Up line, there was a Distant (located at Butterswood) but no Stop signal. The stop signal in this case was the Red disc/crossing light mounted on the gates. If the train passed the Down Distant clear this meant the crossing was clear, but if the Distant was at Caution, then the driver had to observe a Green handsignal from the Crossing Keeper

Chris, in the 1980's era, were you aware that when a train is accepted from New Holland Bulk Tml, Barton Road LC is activated and cannot be released until Barrow Road LC is clear?

1980's mode has nothing to do with it and its the same issue that's been reported and fixed. The release version has Barton Roads data for Barrow Road crossing (or vice versa...I don't recall off the top of my head).

Incidentally, 1980's mode only affects location around Scunthrope Steel works Entrance E, Grimsby Marsh Junction layout and Cleethorpes Diesel Refuel road (least as far as I recall it does anyway).
