Another quiery I've come across wjilst doing the Passenger & Parcels train part of the forth coming 1987 - 1988 timetable for South Humberside is platform lengths at Cleethorpes station. In the Section YC WTT there is a HST working - 1A02 0620 SX Cleetthorpes - King's Cross 'executive'. The set length for an ECML HST set is 220m. Power car(18m)+8 x Mk.3 coaches(23m)+Power car which is 220m. Now in the WTT there isn't any ECS working between Cleethorpes & Neville Hill T*RSMD or any where else. Therefore one must assume the set stables in Cleethorpes carriage sidings overnight. With the set swapping over at King's Cross for repairs & or maintenance. Whilst testing to see if P3 at Cleethorpes could accomodate the HST I found that the train overhunging passed the signal at the end of P3 despite me using the 'Far End' option of the stopping point vice the default. To get round this I've entered a ficticioys ECS working from Neville Hill T&RSMD - Cleethorpes with a view of platforming it in P1. Does anyone know if this will a). fit in P1 or secondly does anyone remember what plarform the train actually ran from & where was it stabled during 1987/88?

although not 100% helpful, could you work it so that it reverses and the driver rings for authorisation? this is how many railtours work from cleethorpes as they are too long to be accomodated into P3. it is possible in real life that all the HST coaches are in the platform but the powercar overhangs the signal? this is just a practical solution to the problem i have no idea about the actual working "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Log in to reply |

Well yes jc92 you are right that could be one way to do it. It would mean the same for the return working in the evening. I will have to test that proposal you've suggested tomorrow morning. Will post result tomorrow after test. Many thanks.

Another thought may be that it wasn't a standard rake but shortened? Again, just a thought! Would make sense if it stopped at Cleggy overnight

The HST stabled in the platform at Cleethorpes as far as I know - certainly no ECS from anywhere like Neville Hill.

Don't think it was a shortened rake as all ECML HST sets were 8 coaches plus 2 power cars. The shortened rakes were Western Region sets based at Bristol St. Phillips Marsh T&RSMD & 4 sets based at Plymouth Laira. These had 7 coaches vice the 8 on the remaining Western Region sets. Which later became the Cross Country sets. There definately isn't an empty stock working in the WTT & I suspect you are right the set probably stood in the platform, which I suspect would have been platform 1 (if that one is the longest) & looking at the sim there are 2 signals close together. If the train did stand in P1 at Cleethorpes then a seed service would have to be put in shortly after 0000 at the start of the sim so the set would stand there until 0620 departure time. Set would have been fuelled whilst on another diagram & swapped over during the day at King's Cross no doubt. Any more theories or anyone who actually knows what the set did at Cleethorpes, the info would be most grateful. Thanks to the others for offering suggestions.

Seeded an ECS HST from Grimsby Royal Docks to P1 at Cleethorpes station. Trains run OK, however rear of train stands between P993 & P991 signals. That said driver would have probably asked permission to proceed forward when train ready to start. So this looks like the favourite option. 1D06 1804 SX King's Cross - Cleethorpes 'executive' arrives back at Cleethorpes at 21:09. Which would also block P2. Luckily P3 & P4 can cater for the last remaining passenger trains.

The HST set did stable overnight in P1 at Cleethorpes after it got refuelled and cleaned ready for its 06:20 departure

Where did the HST get fuelled & cleaned? Did it arrive in P3 & then go into Cleethorpes CS? If so, then it would come out & shunt to P1. I would have thought the set wouldn't need re-fuelling if it had come off Bounds Green T&RSMD fully fuelled for it's run to Cleethorpes. Cleaning could have been done in P1 at Cleethorpes.

I'm not sure if it was fuelled or not. The fuelling point as it is today wasn't there back then, as it's a new installation for the 185's.

From my railway career experience what I suspect happened with this HST service to & from Cleethorpes is this. The diagram the set worked probably showed it to come off Bounds Green T&RSMD in the afternoon ECS to Kings Cross to work the service to Cleethorpes. As earlier pointed out the train would arrive in platform 1 at Cleethorpes & stand there all night forming 1A02 0620 departure back to King's Cross. Carriage cleaning would be carried out at Cleethorpes station during its overnight stop. If the train required attention to a fault, then the set would work to King's Cross where it would then run ECS to Bounds Green T&RSMD. This was the practice on the Midland Mainline during the 1980s. When I was on the footplate at St. Pancras any HSTs that devloped a fault during the course of the day would then be swapped onto a diagram which terminated the train at Sheffield & then run ECS to Neville Hill T&RSMD for servicing & or repairs despite the mileages being longer than on diagrams which terminated at Derby or Nottingham. The fuel point at Cleethorpes probably fuelled DMUs only, bearing in mind Immingham TMD was just around the corner for the duelling of locos. HST power cars have the same fuel pipe connector as locos, whereas DMUs are fueled with a gun, just the same as you use to fill your car. As a result wouldn't be able to re-fuel HST power cars unless they had a screw on adaptor.

So with regard to your last post Postal, are we saying then that the HST terminates in P3 at Cleethorpes & then is signalled into Cleethorpes CS to be cleaned & re-fuelled there. Once that has been done the HST then comes out of Cleethorpes CS into P3 & then shunts to P1 via P.998(rev). There are 3 tracks forming Cleethorpes carriage sidings in the 1980s mode. So apart from the carriage sidings themselves, can we deduce that the lines forming the washing plant & the bank line which are not shown on the sim?

Just for clarification, 1) The off-sim track at Cleethorpes CS are the same no matter which era you choose. 2) They are only a representation to show "multiple" lines. 3) They do not in any way indicate how many actual lines there are/were. Log in to reply |
