Hang on a minute, isn't the MML already electrified from St. Pancras all the way to Bedford (where it rather abruptly ends)?

How are they going to electrify it from London if it's already electrified...use Third Rail (DC)?

The MML runs further as Bedford, so I assume they will extend the wires past Bedford.

As I understand it, electrification will run St Pancras - Sheffield via Derby with Nottingham being left as a possible addition but not part of the main plan

Seeing as the MML already has been electrified from St Pancras to Bedford then surely all Network Rail needs to do is pick up from Bedford and continue onto Sheffield via Derby and if possible when Nottingham gets done, get it done from both the MML and ECML end.

Surely this should be done at the same time - with hourly services that would otherwise be diesel powered but running under the wires for over 90% of their journey. Even if they were the dual power HST2 (can't remember the new name off the top of my head) it makes more sense to run electric throughout, surely.

Further update for this thread, which I've recalled having read this article - you have a choice of website but wording is the same

BBC - Network Rail hopes to electrify East Midlands rail route

Direct trains from Derby, Nottingham and Leicester to Birmingham International could also be introduced.
Interesting how they shoehorn in that sort of thing into their grand plan - unless they're thinking of electrifying Derby-Bham as well, all of those just seem to be one-stop extensions of current services.

If/when the MML ever gets OHLE from Bedford to Derby/Sheffield and in fill to Doncaster, it would be an absolute no-brainer to further in-fill from Proof House Jn through to Derby.

Its the same when the GWML is done, it should also be done from Oxford to Coventry/Proof House (via Tyseley), OHLE on major routes should be an absolute must, considering the savings on pollution/journey times etc.

I only hope someone comes up with an electric loco that could tow 40+ loaded stone hoppers and you could have the Mendip trains electric hauled to/from Westbury, hey I can dream!

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A
