Ahhh, they were the days.. when you could dispatch a train just by hanging out the window and nodding at the driver!

Cheers Chris

Thanks for sharing that clip. Very interesting.

Had problems with some of the locations on that clip though: does anyone know where they were? The only one I recognised was Pantyffynnon (23m 44s to 24m 33s). I also noted Mickle Trafford, Uckfield, Mouldsworth and Speen Bridge.

There was Aylesbury, Banavie and Princess Risborough. Those are just 3 that I can recall.

saw a much more recent video by network rail, though some bits in it are certainly a many years back
part of their (probably) trial to educate the public

signal boxes are:
uttoxeter, staffordshire

The signal box shown very near the beginning is Princes Risborough North and although now disused is still intact - minus its steps!
The station platform shown not long after is I think the Up platform at High Wycombe and the pivoting lower quadrant signals I think were those that used to be just off the end of the Up platform at High Wycombe. What used to be the only through platform at Princes Risborough is also shown. This is now the Up platform (2) as the down through platform has since been restored and is now Platform 3.

There is still talk of reinstating the link through to the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway as there is room to reinstate the old down platform face (which I guess would become Platform 4) that was used many years ago for the Watlington branch and until 1990 for the oil freight trains to Thame along the remains of the Oxford branch. Currently there is an out of use link to the C&PRR and short spur of the old Oxford branch remaining which Chiltern Railways use for temporary carriage sidings.

The location that's got me stumped is the location where fairly early on you see a signalman handing a token to the driver of what looks like a class 115 DMU. It LOOKS like it may be somewhere near the start of the single-line to Aylesbury just north of Princes Risborough, but I'm not at all sure on this. It COULD be somewhere in the Scottish Highlands, or there again right up against the Chiltern escarpment on the way from Risborough to Aylesbury.

Very interesting film though!
