I can remember at Culham & Radley there were intermediate block colour light signals at Nuneham Bridge controlled by each box. Both boxes had semaphore signalls. Underneath the respective section signals was the colour lght repeater for the intermediate block signal. The semaphores green aspect was blanked out. When the semaphore signal was on there was no light in the colour light repeater. when cleared the repeater showed either yellow or green, obviously no light in the semaphore. Did this arrangement occur anywhere else on the railway as it was the only instance I came across. Does anyone have a photo? Aubrey Log in to reply |

These where quite common at one time. One that springs to mind is at York Yard North on the down goods. It was a semaphore arm which carried a yellow/green colour light repeater for Skelton Jn's Down Goods Home, SJ74. This is not my photo but the signal here is visible http://www.flickr.com/photos/yorkshires-finest/5253921680/ Last edited: 11/08/2012 at 10:48 by TomOF Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Haraubrad |

bognor regis' starter still has this arrangement, where the distant for the IB is 2 aspect colour light, which illuminates only when the starter is cleared. its the only one i know of still in use. there was also one around the redditch/barnt green area which fringed to saltley (before the box was fully open). edit: it was actually leamington spa as shown here: http://www.roscalen.com/signals/WestMids/index.htm website is adrian the rocks http://www.roscalen.com/signals/Bognor/index.htm bognor regis "We don't stop camborne wednesdays" Last edited: 11/08/2012 at 12:47 by jc92 Log in to reply The following user said thank you: Haraubrad |

This arrangement was present at Leamington Spa where the last semaphore signal was also effectively the distant for Saltley South Bottom Panel. http://www.roscalen.com/signals/WestMids/index.htm#Leamington Log in to reply |

The semaphore arm appears to be showing a red aspect while off! PS - on second thoughts it looks like the photo colour balance has been touched up and accentuated the red spectactle... Last edited: 12/08/2012 at 09:45 by TomOF Log in to reply |

I believe the semaphore "off" was blanked off to not show an aspect, and then the colour light head below took over showing either Yellow (if SY102 was Red) or Green (if SY102 was yellow or green).

There was one in the Salisbury area also (down main between Salisbury station and Wilton Jcn IIRC) before the area was resignalled - there's a pic of in the "A Pictorial Record of Southern Signalling" book by George Pryer (page 86). The electro-pneumatic semaphores in & around Salisbury station fringed with Wilton Jcn, which had been resignalled with colour lights in the late 60s so Salisbury West's down section signal had that setup.

There were a couple at West Croydon A (London end of the station) pre-resignalling (1980-ish), platform starters from the up main and the bay on a rather nice bracket; the c/ls had 3 aspects and could show Y, YY or G. The next baox was Gloucester Road Jc (a Westinghouse L frame from the mid-1950s), working to Gloucester Road was TCB whereas the working through the station to West Croydon B was still Sykes Lock & Block.
