PC to TV connecting cable query 09/09/2012 at 07:50 #35507

I want to connect my PC to the TV and wondered what cable I need.

I think this one will do save that the cable end colours are different and in the rubrick it refers to RGB and not Pr,Y,Pb. Also to HD TVs - mine is not HD.

For reference the connectors available to me are here. Though have not found the s-video one yet.
It's only £1.95 so no big deal, I'd just like to get it right if possible. Any experts out there?

I can answer that, Peter. Sadly it won't.

If the PC and TV have matching connectors then you are laughing as you can connect your PC direct to the TV. However, if the connector/colour combinations don't match then you'll more than likely need some kind of convertor. Unfortunately, the cable you reference is not going to work with the connections you've shown.

The key is the colour coding as different colours represent certain types of signal as follows...

Red and white RCA - Audio only
Yellow RCA = Composite video (one connection with complete picture detail.)
Red/Green/Blue RCA = Component video (image split into colour component signals)

Your best option is to investigate PC to Composite convertors and/or PC to SCART convertors. One website I found (when I searched PC to SCART) said Maplin make a PC to TV box that converts you VGA out to composite. As your TV has a composite input, you should be able to connect it straight to the output of the convertor box. However, I didn't search Maplin's site to find out if its available or not and consequently, I don't know what the likely cost of such device is likely to be. It may turn out to be quicker, and less hassle (and you'll get a better image) if you buy a new TV (depending on the sizwe you want of course) as that will likely have the component connection or even a direct VGA input you can use.

Peter, My TV manual details how to connect a PC to the television. Obviously your does not. Tried the manufacture?

Thanks, the manual is pretty basic unfortunately.
It's not something I'm particularly vexed about, just seemed like a good idea as last night we found a way of watching the US Open tennis via my laptop but it was difficult for both my wife and I to see the screen. My wife mentioned that her sister can plug her laptop into the TV so I was looking into it.

The connectors on your TV are not component video (neither RGB nor YPbPr). You have SCART, S-Video, and the yellow "composite" (aka CVBS) video in - don't confuse this with "component". The red and white RCA plugs are audio.

You could get a converter from VGA or HDMI (whatever output is present on your computer) to SCART, S-Video or composite/CVBS.
Edit: as composite is pretty low quality video, I'd try to avoid it.

The link I added to my first post goes to the Philips page for the sockets on my TV [24PW6518/05] though as I indicated there is no s-video socket in actuality.

I've looked up converters since and it appears I could get one for about £15.

Unless your graphics card has an RGB output then you're going to need a converter, though it might be cheaper and easier to get a graphics card with one inbuilt than trying to get an external converter to behave.

@ Sacro: He needs a converter anyway for this TV, even with a VGA output on the computer (I suppose you meant VGA when saying RGB).

No, I meant RGB, as in the signalling on SCART.

Try vga to s-video or vga to av?

@Sacro are you trying to differentiate "converter" and "adapter"? (In my understanding, "converter" uses an electrical circuit to convert signals, while "adapter" simply rearrange its pin layout.)

I am quite curious what those "EXT.x" are. Had never saw it before (at least I haven't in Hong Kong).

Those are SCART sockets.

Depending upon the age of the laptop, they normally come with a Composite output or S-Video. Obvioulsy, the Composite would suit you better.

OK all fixed - realised the other TV has a HDMI slot as does the laptop. Seems to work.
