there is no carlisle timetable chat section yet. so i am posting this here. i am working on producing a timetable for carlisle covering may 73 - december 73. this is the short period between which, the PSB was fully commissioned, but workings were all still diesel hauled. i need help working out what locos would have worked what, as going back that far is completely alien to me. (the year TOPS was introduced). i gather that: Class 50s were working all WCML pass. workings preston - glasgow, some of which are in multiple. as dictated by the WTT. however were they responsible for all passenger services, and were they responsible for sleepers? what was responsible for parcels? Cl.25/40/47 would be my guess. i am guessing class 47s would have dominated freightliner workings. what would have worked the services to hardendale and shap? also if anyone can provide a general overview of traction in the area at that time, i would be most grateful. Way before my time (born 4 years later!) - but a quick thought: http://www.railbrit.co.uk/location.php?photographer=&loc=Carlisle&offset=33 (and subsequent pages in that album) has some photos of Carlisle in that era. Might be worth a flick though? regards, Tim Log in to reply |

Joe I'll try & clarify a few things here for you. Firstly TOPS was introduced in 1975 & was a computer based real time system which tracked rolling stock around the network in real time & was purchased from Southern Pacific (SP) which was an American Railroad company. In 1973 although locos were allocated to various depots they came under the control of Divisions & as a result it was common place for locos to work trains back to there respected divisions. Yes you are correct that Cl.47s worked the majority of freightliner services. However Cl.45s were usually found on the St. Pancras/Nottingham - Glasgow services via the S&C. The majority of freight services were worked by pairs of Cl.20s, Cl.24s & Cl.25s. You could use the rule of thumb that trains bound for the Newcastle division were worked by Cl.24s, Cl.37s, Cl.40s & Cl.47s. Trains bound for the Sheffield division (Tinsley etc) were worked by Cl.47s, Cl.40s, Cl.37s, pairs of Cl.25s & pairs of Cl.20s. Most of the WCML services were worked by Cl.50s & in some cases pairs of Cl.50s or Cl.47s. Freight services to the various midland divisions(Nottingham & Birmingham) we worked by pairs of Cl.20s, pairs of Cl.25s, Cl.45s & Cl.47s. Scottish Region based locos such as Cl.20s, Cl.25s, Cl.26s, Cl.27s, Cl.37s, Cl.40s & Cl.47s could equally ne seen on any freights between the Scottish Region - Carlisle - Scottish Region. I suspect Hardendale trains would have been worked by pairs of Cl.37s bearing in mind the weight of the loaded trains & the route they run over.
