Playing the 2012 timetable and there are several moves from the carriage sidings to platform 4 via the no.2 spur and 454 position light signal.

Having arrived on the no.2 spur, and 454 signal cleared towards platform 4, the driver then calls requesting authority to proceed.

Is this necessary considering it is a signalled move?

Interesting, as I had this move and he called before I set the route into Platform 4 which was blocked by a points failure. I think the idea is that he is calling for authority to move to the bit before sig 454, since it doesn't enter the area at the east end.

Made sense to me, but I can't recall it calling up at signal 454 for an authority to move, it was running late too and answered the call when it appeared I believe...

I suspect you are correct James, he's ringing for authority to move towards 454; if 454 is red, depending on the sighting distance the train won't move towards it until it clears, hence only getting the phone call if the signal is off.
