What am I missing with signal D714 on the Tay Bridge ? Sometimes it changes to green no bother and the next time it stays red no matter what I do.

Only one train at a time is allowed on the centre part of the bridge.

So the signal will be held at red if you've already set the route in the opposite direction.

the bridge wasnt rebuilt, its a completely new separate structure built next to the original the original supports sit next to the current bridge

I'm sure you are right, Andy. If I remember correctly I went through my library and found the relevant reference which I quoted on the old Forum. The Rules of the Plan now gives weight restriction as the limiting factor. Dundee Central Junction instructions include "Owing to weight restrictions on the Tay Bridge, the High Girders section of the bridge must be treated as a Single Line." The Sectional Appendix forbids double heading for the same reason. If there is a second loco DIT, it must have barrier wagons giving a minimum length of 60m. between locos.

Not strictly true as a lot of the girders and steelwork from the old bridge were used in the reconstruction.

The Tay Bridge high girders restriction being discussed here was only imposed in 1995. A project is ongoing to relax it for certain classes of train, which will involve some alterations to the interlocking at Dundee SC.
