What are green flashing colour-light signals used for?

Green flashing colour-light signals were used between Peterborough and Grantham to indicate 140mph running for the defunct APT.

Don't know about the first one sorry!

In answer to Pt 1.

TT'd workings. First bid is Motherwell (to Lanark and Glasgow Central LL). Second bid is anywhere on Cathcart Circle to get to Glasgow Central. Third bid is anywhere on Fife Circle to get to The Waverley. The south of the water experts will no doubt be able to pull out a good few on the suburban networks in/out of London Bridge/Charing Cross/Victoria/Waterloo and Thameslink as well.

[Edit] Forgot New Street to Gloucester/Bristol.
[Edit Pt 2] The Waverley to Dundee/Aberdeen. IIRC there is an XC turn or two that go out to Portobello and round the suburban lines to maintain route knowledge.

OOC workings: Newcastle (King Edward Bridge or High Level) - used to turn ECML sets which are back to front to/from KX.
[Edit Pt 2] Sheffield to Derby via Dore or to Woodhouse Jn.

Looks like Pt 2 is already sorted.

Exeter St. Davids, if FGW can't go via Taunton to Paddington.
Also The Sutton loop on FCC to St Albans and Luton.
And the Kingston Loop and Hounslow loop services from London Waterloo

At all times, FGW to Paddington and SWT to Waterloo (assumes that London counts as the destination).

Also Weybridge to Waterloo, via Surbiton or via V Water & Staines (albeit probably not a through train).

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

How about York? Most trains to Leeds depart in the up direction, but the service via Harrogate departs in the down direction.

Also, how about Nottingham? Most trains to Peterborough/Norwich run via Grantham, but I think there is an early morning service via Loughborough.

Birmingham New Street- most trains for Gloucester depart via Five Ways, but some leave the other way via Proof House and Bordesley.

Flashing greens mean that the next signal in advance is showing at least green; trains authorized to exceed 125 mph can use this to know that it is safe to do so. In addition, drivers even now use the fact that a certain signal is flashing to know that they aren't taking the diverging route at a subsequent signal and can so run more generously (even though not exceeding 125).

As to the other one, most of the Piccadilly Line can be added to the list, since trains via Heathrow Terminal Four run all the way back to Cockfosters. The same is true of the northern branches and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line, since trains run round the loop at Kennington and, last time I checked, no attempt was made to force detraining. Stations on the Roding Valley loop have trains that go both ways to the western termini.

Many of the stations on the Merseyrail Wirral (West Kirby and New Brighton branches). Most of the trains run from WK or NB, around the Liverpool loop, and back to their origin, each with the same headcode.

Don't forget the Chester and Ellesmere Port branches.

Also, Brighouse- trains to Leeds via Mirfield and Dewsbury in one direction, and via Halifax in the other direction.

I'm not aware if foreign stations also count, but there is Szolnok, Hungary. Trains from Eastern Hungary, Romania or Ukraine depart west to Budapest-Keleti via Ujszasz (line 120a), and there are 8 "circular" (rather "loop"-shaped route) InterCity trains coming from Budapest-Nyugati via Cegled (line 100a) and departing east for the Debrecen - Nyiregyhaza (line 100) - Miskolc (line 100c or now part of line 80) - Budapest-Keleti (line 80) route.

The another one is Gyor. There are fast trains to Szombathely via Gyorszabadhegy, Papa, Celldomolk and Sarvar (line 10 and 20) and InterCity trains straight via Csorna and Sarvar (line 8, 16).

Assuming London counts as one? I wager Cambridge and Kings Lynn (including stations in between), with services going to both Kings Cross & Liverpool Street.

There are also the Waterloo-Waterloo circulars both via the Hounslow loop & the Kingston loop

Unsure if this'll count, but here goes anyway....

As I only found out or worked out very recently whilst playing a timetable on Southampton, a Salisbury to Romsey train (e.g.: 2R22) or a Romsey to Salisbury train (e.g.: 2S23) calls at Romsey twice.

2J45 - the 10:13 Stockport to Stalybridge, runs Friday only.
