I give up... Can't set route through Huish and Puxton LC in either direction (e.g., between signals BP0 - BP2), playing 1980s sim starting 0:00. Clicking the signals doesn't display a flashing light. No error message. Searching forums under these location names brings up nothing. What have I done or not done to be reduced to a head-banging idiot by this sim? Thanks. Log in to reply |

Quote:What have I done or not done to be reduced to a head-banging idiot by this sim?Patience (or rather lack thereof). Huish and Puxton level crossings are controlled locally - simply wait for a train to approach and watch the gatekeepers swing into action lowering those barriers for you with no user input. These signals are approach controlled, they should change automatically when a train approaches. Just set a route as far as the first auto sig, then you should be fine.

" said:These signals are approach controlledNot quite- approach control is where a signal is held at red until a train nearly stops at it. As Sidestick said, the signals at Puxton and Huish are released by the crossing keeper when the barriers are down, which should happen before a train encounters a yellow. I've added relevant notes and links to the Bristol manual about these crossings. Thanks everyone who replied for clearing this up, and to Steamer for amending the manual. Tested this and it's automatic, as you say. I will add a link in the Wiki to the Bristol sim with its extra types of LC such as CK. Since the Crossing Keeper is only human, it's possible that the LC may become "stuck" if he is taken ill, etc. Has this type of failure been programmed into any sim? Log in to reply |

That said, it would be interesting if this type of incident popped up in 'difficult' mode (although technically the box concerned was a fully fledged signal box, not just a 'gate box'). Coincidentally there was a failure of some sort at one of these crossings in real life the other week - it was adding about 5 minutes to journey times between Bristol and the Weston area.

That's the sort of area where rules & regs can be used creatively, I'd have thought - certainly would have been in my day. If the keeper is that ill, there'd probably be no communication at all. Cue Examination of the Line (not just cautioning through), which would establish the reality of the situation at the crossing. And get the first affected train through the area in the process. I'm no longer fully up on R&R but am I not right in thinking that trains may be cautioned to approach a failed LC prepared to stop short and proceed only when the line is clear? I think that would put a lot more than 5min into timings but I see no reason why the same thing shouldn't be done until relief can be arranged. If there's questions whether something that can be done for a failure of equipment can't be done for a failure of a human, someone would surely have the power to authorise it? (I'm quite sure a movements inspector would've done in the old days.) Log in to reply |
