Coming into SimSig without any prior knowledge of UK signalling practices, I wish I'd discovered these old movies a lot earlier. They were made in 1989 and (speaking to other newbies) provide an excellent general introduction. [video]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYkuBvmmak[/video] This movie clearly explains absolute block signalling and shows all the common types of light signals, including shunt signals, in use. It also demonstrates use of tokens in single line operation. I later found Derbybest already posted a link to it here (see subsequent discussion in that thread) but feel an extra post will make it easier to find. At the beginning you will see "Part 1" but never fear, the YouTube video includes both parts 1 and 2.
