Anyone know what the problems were? Started yesterday evening and followed through to today with many long distance trains delayed by 30-60mins. I got delayed at west ealing by 10 mins, but somehow managed to get to waterloo in 30 mins in time for the early train to Ports

I'm not sure, it closed on 25th December 2011.

TVSC however suffered a UPS issue last night that lead to all signals returning to red, berths being wiped, and track circuit problems. Took around an hour for them to restart the SSIs and get things moving. Not looked at this mornings problems yet.

I hope not, Slough IECC shut in December 2011 Ok serious answer:

There were power supply issues affecting all of TVSC workstations last night at about 0015. Power was restored to Didcot/Causeway/Newbury/Reading West/Twyford workstations within an hour, however further faults prevented restoration of Hayes/Acton/Paddington workstations. Power was eventually restored at approximately 0400, where it was discovered that temporary alterations made to the SSI to 'ignore' litte bits and pieces of infrastructure installed but not comissioned as part of crossrail works had been deleted by the shutdown. In particular this prevented trains leaving Old Oak Common depot, or using the Up and Down Main lines at Hayes. These alterations were eventually reprogrammed by 0545 by which time FGWs morning peak was already going to be in tatters.

Finally, at about 0900 an up train experienced an Adverse Change of Aspect at Stockley Bridge Jn (between Hayes and West Drayton) which further delayed up trains into Paddington while it was rectified.

Knock on delays occuring throughout the day.

EDIT: Ben posted while I was typing

Was it power supply problems that took out three bridges earlier this year ?

Fire Alarm if we're thinking of the same incident...

Are you thinking of the Fire at Preston Park in an equipment cabinet last december. That brought a few days worth of chaos with TBW taking place. The Three Bridges fire alarm I believe was in February or something like that as it delayed one our of meetings as the management were still picking the bones out of it with their conference calls etc etc.

Thanks for the detailed description. Indeed I meant TVSC (Thames valley signal centre), I wasn't too sure about which is it

May I ask what SSI is?

Also, I'm probably wrong, but wasn't the fact that we don't have a sim covering Paddington to Swindon because it was used by network rail for Slough? If It's not in use anymore, can't we release a modified, older version of it?

SSI = Solid State Interlocking.

Perhaps that's the sim that is being prepared for release?

As Karl says, Solid State Interlocking. However, it's a bit of a mixed term these days. In this case it refers to the name of the equipment developed by BR Research and others in the 1980s but it's also used elsewhere as a generic term to refer to electronic interlockings. CBI is also used to refer to the same - Computer-Based Interlocking.

Old Oak Common PSB preceded Slough New IECC (up until the early 90s I guess). But the transfer from Slough New to TVSC didn't involve any resignalling. I suppose you could call it a re-lcok and re-control as at least some of the SSIs were replaced by Smartlocks and, as described, the operations moved to TVSC at Didcot.

And before anybody asks what a Smartlock is, it's based on SSI and is virtually like-for-like replaceable. However, it benefits in being able to refer to adjacent interlockings in an object-oriented format. SSI had to use special inter-interlocking telegrams to convey information and requests which was complicated and difficult to check.

If so, I definitely am failing my second year of uni

It was a very trying evening for all concerned, the main problem on the FGW side was once 1C36/2R90/1D87/1P90/2J78/1C99 were cleared from Reading, was 1A36 at Ealing Broadway/Acton West. Eventually it had to set-back to Ealing Broadway station, once it was ascertained it could do so in a safe manner.

Much kudos goes to the Reading signaller in TVSC for his work during the period of disruption and keeping everyone at work informed the best they could. It does make me wonder if this can happen during routine maintenance to TVSC what could happen when the ROCs come on-line in a few years - whole swathes of the country will come to a grinding halt!

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A
