Not too sure about the centre, but both power cars are Cl.127, just looks odd to me not being a 4 car set. Being born & bred in Bedford I grew up with them. When they were transferred away once the Cl.317 took over Bedford men had to train Bletchley men on them. I've got several Birmingham New Street station working books where there is a service from Manchester Piccadilly to New Street with a Cl.127 converted to DPU in the 1987/1988 book & the summer 1988 book & IIRC the 1988/1989 book. Headshot119 I'll tell you something else I've got about 15-20 'FG1' keys. Some of them brand new never been used. When I was Trainmaster at Bescot I found a load of them in a drawer in an old desk. Still got them in my old drivers bag. Those keys are quite rare to find these days. When I was driving on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway most of the chaps driving the DMUs had copies made, whereas the ones I've got actually have 'FG1' stamped on them.

The two I've got are both copies, the only original one I have is the desk key for the more modern units (which names escapes me at the moment). What next you'll tell me you've got a load of handles and spoons lying around :woohoo: "Passengers for New Lane, should be seated in the rear coach of the train " - Opinions are my own and not those of my employer Log in to reply |

Well if you are attending the next SimSig meet I can give you an original BR 'FG1' key if you want one that is? They were very rare when I found tham as most drivers chucked them away when the 1st Generation units finished.

Returning to Keith's most informative (as ever!) post #14 (thanks again Keith!), I agree that geography and traffic generators form the backbone of any layout, real or fictitious, and that historical peculiarities for that area should be kept in mind when designing a fictitious layout. I'm not sure how much developing a history of the railway is needed in a fictitious layout, since the layout is a snapshot in time where it serves the need of industries and passenger traffic current at that period. All locations will have made-up (but authentic-sounding) names. (I'm thinking of location-detailed model railway layouts here). I can see two separate but not conflicting aims: When simulating an actual area in present time or a past epoch, the goal should be to represent that area as factually as possible, taking all factors into account as detailed by Keith (and as our current sims do); When simulating a fictitous area, the goal should be to make the sim as playable and challenging as desired, with historical constraints acknowledged but not permitted to have the final say in design. It should be possible to create a fictitous landscape resembling one or more actual locations but with enough geographical differences to make it a new experience altogether. The layout might incorporate aspects of well known regions (industries, towns) under new names, with a few but not too many bottlenecks. In fact, a whole set of fictitious locations, chained together, might eventuate. Now, a fictitious sim's creator might prefer to begin by writing a Tolkien-like history of the area, in which case the final layout might well resemble the current sims of today, with all the little historical constraints and challenges we have come to expect from SimSig's downloads. On the other hand, the creator might wish to streamline the layout, the better to focus on improved playability and faster traffic flow. Since anything is possible in a fictitious area, it would not be unreasonable for the data of a given fictitious geographic area to be released (saving a lot of designers a lot of time) so it can be re-used in various ways, giving rise to different layouts, yet with the same location names! I'm sorry if this will offend anyone but in the interests of quality control I do think the release of such software should be carefully made available to developers, the SimSig Team does a fantastic job and do help others who have put in thousands of hours to help develop the software so for now No, I don't think any editor should be freely available to all I think we should be happy with the status quo.
