Do I have a bug with the default Loader programme for Exeter?

Despite following the instructions in the Manual the Tokenless Block system does not appear to work for me. Up train 1L20 enters the single track section after having requested and received the green acceptance light to Honiton and the line occupied red light appears - everything OK thus far. I receive the message that it has reached Honiton and 1L20 disappears from the train list but the red light does not extinguish. As a consequence the next (down) train cannot enter the single line. I have restarted the game five or six times but it never works.

A further peculiarity also happened. On one of the restarts a detached section of track diagram appeared next to the Tokenless Block Instrument. It was a short track diagram for Honiton with a down (operable) starter signal at the beginning of the single track, at red, together with two signal numbers with white lights and also the numbers 1 and 2. I presumed that this was the bit that was the missing link and that I would thereafter be able to get the Tokenless Block system to work properly but, after saving the game and going back to it, it had disappeared and I have never seen it again. And I'm sure I was not dreaming!

Should this bit of detached track be on my track diagram? Am I operating things incorrectly? I have read and re-read the Manual and searched for any other references to this bit of Exeter but cannot find any. Or is there a bug/ do I need to re-download the game?

Help please.

Have you updated to the latest version of Exeter? (On the front page of the loader click "check for updates").

I have just ran two trains using the latest version and both work the tokenless block correctly.

Sounds like the debug area became visible to you for some reason. Assuming that I've not done a "Swindid" with this sim too (and left the area exposed) that does sound like a save bug of some sort. Are you saying that on reloading one save this area was visible continuously till you stopped playing?

I can't reacall if that area is off-screen so the screen parameters must have been saved/loaded wrongly or it's hidden within the visible area (normally it's the former).

I just downloaded and installed Exeter and this section is visible, as is the Main Line beyond Totnes to signal DM230 and there are also some separate track circuit indications for Bristol and Westbury visibile by scrolling down when looking at the Cogload Junction area. However after using the Loader to update, these sections all disappear.

YES, AT SOME STAGE IT WAS VISIBLE. WITHOUT WISHING TO SOUND FACETIOUS, IT MUST HAVE BEEN VISIBLE FOR ME TO SEE IT. BUT JUST WHEN IT DISAPPEARED I CANNOT BE ABSOLUTELY SURE BUT MY BEST GUESS IS THAT IT DID NOT REAPPEAR WHEN I RELOADED THE GAME AFTER A SAVE AND EXIT.

Just checked and v4.1 did indeed the debug area was visible, not sure anyone reported that before.

Anyway the important point is do we have a problem with v4.3.1?

It is possible to lock up the system (can't recall exactly how) and that can happen in real life. The solution I, from memory, was told is to talk a train past the relevant red signal and then when it arrives the other end the resets will kick in as normal. Now that may or may not be your problem but it's something to bear in mind.

Changing the instrument from accept to normal and back will clear that problem for me.
I now change the instrument to normal for the period that I have an up train in the section and return it to accept when the train reports arrival at Honiton

The Manual says "When the train arrives at Honiton you will receive a message and the system will revert to Normal".

Yes, a message is received but the system does not revert to Normal, it is not possible to change back to Normal whilst the train is in the section and, moreover, it refuses all attempts to switch it (the system) back after the train arrives at Honiton.

If my problem is deemed to be "operator error" then what is the error?

I have noticed that it appears that it is impossible to switch the Normal/Accept lever back or extinguish the TIS light if one attempts to try out the system in advance of any train running between Exeter and Honiton. Surely that should be possible in order to familiarise oneself with the procedure.

Without knowing exactly what happened step by step in your case it's impossible to say what went wrong and why and whether a fix is required. Everything else is speculation.

First is it v4.1 you are using, if so then that's been superceded - please update.

Second although you say you have reloaded saves several times, it's not clear whether on each relaunch you are starting from a position where no train has been offered by you and that thus this is replicated for every attempt. If it is then we can maybe work out what's going wrong. If you can't replicate then I suggest we move on until it can be readily replicated.

Just picking up on this thread - I have just downloaded the Exeter file available, and it is still v4.1. I cannot see any subsequent version and it doesn't show up on the 'Repository Newest' list...

Have you seen the thread "New updates available (16 Dec 2013)"?

In the first post, Geoff says:

Ha- sorry there was a missing step in the WIKI guidance for UP trains (added). The Normal/Accept switch must be set Normal at some point. As I think someone has already mentioned above. Still can't recall exactly what the circumstances are where you can lock it up but I have it in an email somewhere.

Track circuit failures will cause the block to be locked at Train in Section. Once the track circuit failure is fixed you can only reset the block to normal with the passage of a train. [Or a pair of pliers across a relay, but you'd end up on a form 1 if you did that :-)]

The real world block is primed for reset by sequential operation of the exit track circuits along with simultaneous operation of a treadle. The signaller then completes the process by switching the acceptance switch to Normal and pressing the Train Arrived button.

Hi I'm playing the Exeter sim, Version 4.3build 1 according to loader info and playing Exeter Summer 2006 v4.0 and Tokenless Block System still appears to be a bug. First up train 1L20 is O.K and once train reaches Honiton system resets however after first down train 1L93 passes Pinhoe it is impossible to reset system.Perhaps we could go back to before Tokenless Block was introduced .

Glad you got it working. As a general rule if it appears not working then I'd need a step by step recount of what/when/how etc so I can attempt to reproduce and then resolve or instruct as necessary.

I'm new to SimSig. I was continuing with my first Exeter attempt last night. A down train appeared at Honiton, I accepted it, saved and went to bed. Loaded the game this morning, the train was stuck at Honiton at red signal HN3, the instrument showing "Train in section" and the lever to "Accept". I attempted to toggle the lever to Normal and Accept again, this caused the driver to report an ACOA, but still somehow stuck at a red signal.


I believe when I saved it, the "train accepted" light was on but not "train in section", which is presumably why the bug has occurred. I might be wrong about this, though. Certainly when I reload the save, the train has not even arrived at Honiton yet (it does so a few seconds after the game starts).

The save game is attached.

Turns out I wasn't using the latest version, however. I've updated it now, perhaps the bug was fixed in this version. The save still exhibits the problem, however.

I can have a look later but as a rule if there is an updated sim then I'd look for the problem to be replicated on that first rather than chase something that my have been resolved.
