I was reading the manual and noticed that in the section on St Mary Cray Jn it states that the up line to Chislehurst briefly merges with the Down Slow Tonbridge Loop "presumably for lack of space".

I just thought I'd confirm that this is indeed true. Before the Channel Tunnel was built, the Tonbridge Loops were both single track, the current Fast Loop being the Up and the current Up Slow Loop being the Down. They were doubled in order to increase capacity between Ashford and Waterloo; but there was not enough room to double the down side without impinging on the Up Chislehurst. This work also reduced conflicts between fast and slow trains at Orpington; prior to this Victoria trains are Orpington used a bay adjacent to the Up Fast.
