In the Brighton 15th October 2009 v1.4 timetable, train 2T21 (8/319 cars) arrives at Brighton platform 6 at 10.19. It divides and 4 cars depart as train 1T16 at 10.34. This leaves 4 cars waiting in the platform for train 1T33 which does not arrive until 14.54. During this period another 10 trains use platform 6, which is OK provided the stopping position of 2T21 was set to "Far end exact" to enable an 8 car train to fit in the platform.

The simulation works OK, but, is it considered good practice to leave a 4 car train in the platform for over 4 hours which passengers will have to walk past to get to other trains further down the platform? There does not seem to be enough capacity on the other platforms to use instead of platform 6. Should these 4 cars be put in the depot for a few hours and returned to the platform when required?

Sounds normal. Happens at other London terminals (Units wise) King's Cross for example used to (not seen it done anymore) have a 4 car 317 in Platform 8 all day as a hot spare, then picked up in the evening to form an 8 car set.

Had that sort of thing on a Sunday once at Victoria, 12 car set in the platform only the 4 car right at the far end was the one in service, felt like an eternity walking from the concourse, through the gates, past 8 coaches to reach the train.

The announcement 'Furthest from the ticket barriers at platform...' would be more suited to sound like 'Closest to the platforms at Battersea Park...'

That unit was FCCs hot spare and yes it used to sit there until it attached or was used as a replacement and in one format or another with the various timetables FCC always leave a spare unit in the station. They don't go to lovers walk as that's a Southern Depot but their were arrangements on Saturday's and Sunday's while Blacfriars was shut to circulate the FCC stock via Lover's Walk to empty the toilets. Even though the in the sim timetable it may show spare capacity in the platforms from time to time, but that rarely happens as there are always Southern stock swaps taking place.

The same still applies now. The 2014 FCC Thameslink Diagrams show a unit (I think a 377 now??) sits at Brighton between the peaks on the platform.
Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

I've not worked panel 6 in the new time table so I haven't noticed. But the new FFC berthing sidings got signed in to use this Monday.

Ooo didn't realise that new berthing sidings were being built. That does explain however why the FCC diagrams were fairly short lived (combined with work in London itself). Where are these located? Being a foreigner I haven't kept up to date with infrastructure changes!!

I was working next to Preston Park Station and popped down to the over bridge at Dyke Road Drive overlooking the new sidings. 2 sidings 1 long for 12 cars? and one much shorter 4?

On the Brighton diagram it is effectively an extension of "Neck" with the scissors crossover and other sidings now lifted.

Down main carriage siding No1 will hold 2x12 cars and Down main carriage siding No2 will hold 1x12 cars or equivalents of.

Hooverman, is this designed to replace, or supplement Preston Park? I'm assuming the latter?

It's designed to take the new class 700 units but it will be used for class 319 and 377 for now. When we swap over from Using Preston Park Sidings to the Down Main sidings, if we are still allowed in times of perturbation to still berth FCC in Preston Park no one has said yet.

A view from the other side of the sidings, pictures 1 - 3 are the diagram and picture 4 is the control desk.

Pictures 5 - 7 show the new TD berths that the Thameslink project paid for at Preston Park Sidings, Hove Yard and Brighton Wall Sidings.
