Hi;

I am putting together a timetable for Exeter for Summer 1991 (Post Speedlink). I have WTTs PC and PF for this period, but little info on trip workings.

Does anyone know the trip numbers/headcodes?

As far as I know, at Exeter, there was at least one class 08 on duty to shunt riverside yard, and work trips between Riverside and West Yard and Alphington road siding as required.

At Taunton I've seen pictures of a Class 08 on duty to shunt Fairwater Yard, and trip to Taunton Cider, which I believe continued to use rail Post Speedlink.

What other, if any, trip workings were there in this period?



Another feature of this period is the unbalance of up/down freight workings. The two principal up workings, to Mossend and Bescot/Cliffe Vale, (Carrying mostly china clay) have no down counterparts in the WTT. Does anyone know how the clay empties (and other traffic, e.g. Cars for Exeter) from these workings found their way back to the South West?

The only possibility I can see from the WTT appears to be the 6C46 08:25 SX Cardiff Tidal T.C. - Exeter Riverside N.Y. I assume this train would have carried empty scrap wagons for Alphington Road, but would it have carried anything else e.g. clay empties worked back to South Wales on other services?

there was a pilot for the station (exeter SD), which would normally be an 08, but I've seen pics of a 31 covering the duty.

the Riverside Yard pilot Tripped TTAs to the fuel point from riverside and back. there was also as you say a trip to alphington road by the Riverside Pilot, however I don't know what was conveyed. the station pilot would berth either in Hyde park, or in West yard depending on duties to be covered.

The Taunton Pilot also acted as station pilot overnight when some parcels shunting took place (assuming there was any in 1991).

I have a 1980 copy of "shunter duties" at home, so I'll take a look at that and see If I've missed anything.

:ooling through my edition od 'Shunters Duties' for 1987-1988 it shows under Exeter St. Davids SD states 1 Cl.08DB as Exeter station pilot which trips between Exeter Riverside Yard & City Basin oil Terminal/Exmouth Junction CCD/Exeter Central Cement Sdgs on days. Also another Cl.08 DB to work in Exeter Riverside Yard. At Taunton it shows 1 Cl.08 DB at the Taunton Concrete Depot. Trips to Fairwater PAD, Shunts at Down Yard & shunts at Taunton station/Cider PS as required.
What I can also list below are the loadings relevant for your you in creating an Exeter 1991 timetable. These loadings are taken from British Rail Western Region Freight Train Loads Book & Specially Authorised Loads from 08th july, 1991 UFN.

Thanks 58050, that's some useful info.
Funnily enough I was wondering about the loadings for the East Usk Jn - Exmouth Jn CCD Coal train as this would be limited by what a Cl37 (or two?) could manage up the bank to Central?

Anyone know the Trip numbers/headcodes for the workings discussed.

As far as I know there was very little in the way of carriage shunting done at Taunton or St Davids in the early 1990s. I'm pretty sure Exeter Central Cement works had closed by summer '91 and the Oil terminal at City Basin was also closed by this time. Not sure when Taunton Concrete Works closed, Post 1989?

I am putting the timetable together with Tuesday's freight workings as this seems to have the most variety, think I will try to include trips serving the following running as required:

Alphington Road:
08 to Trip empty scrap wagons off 6C46 from Cardiff Tidal to Pearce Scrapyard. And return to riverside with Loaded wagons? There was only an up working to Cardiff Tidal on Saturdays so presumably the train was loaded in stages during the week and made up at Riverside for the Saturday departure.

West Yard (Sidings 1-6) - Siding 1:
Serves Premier Distribution. Shunt Ferry Vans. Saw a reference somewhere to Guinness traffic to/from here. Don't know what trains these were carried on?

West Yard (Sidings 1-6) - Sidings 2&3:
These had unloading ramps for Automotive Traffic. Silcocks Express Cartic Wagons tripped to/from riverside. Again unsure on what train these were forwarded/received?

West Yard (Sidings 7-12) - Fuel point/TMD:
08 to trip a couple of TTA Gas Oil Tanks, Dropped off at riverside by 6V62 from Fawley Esso. and return with empties for 6O79 to Eastleigh.

Taunton Cider/Fairwater Yard:
08 to trip a couple of Ferry vans from Fairwater to the Cider Works at some point. Stable 08 when not required in former platfrom 1. Not sure how Cider Traffic was forwarded/recieved as Fairwater yard seems to only be served by a few departmental workings at this time?

Would be greateful if anyone can shed any light on these workings

The second of the 2 shows a Cl.08 shunter with the wagons off the "Silcock Express" which according to my PF for 1990 would probably have come down on 6V91 17:32 SX Halewood Ford - Exeter Riverside N.Y. (Shown as a speedlink service, so it probably conveyed other traffic too).

When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A

I've seen those vids on Youtube. Another intereseting Vid regarding my question about the Coal trains:

The vid was taken four years before my WTT. At 2:15 A coal train arrives in platform 1 then a pair of 31s appear to assist in rear for the climb up to central. Thats, 3 locos with, 16 wagons, load: just over 730 tonnes.
Interestingly the WTT PF for Summer 1991 does not show the equivelent coal train stoppng for an assisting engine, though it is booked to wait at St Davids for about five minutes, so I wonder if the practice of banking continued, and if so what traction was used, I guess 37s? Or maybe a couple of 33s off the Meldon ballast Circuit?

I was thinking of having that test train, hauled by the pair of 'Dutch' 47s shown in the second video in my Simsig WTT to add a bit more interest, running as required with a 'Z' headcode?

Speedlink services had ceased by the start of July 1991, my PF is for 8th July 1991 - 10th May 1992 and shows the only Down train to arrive at Riverside coming from Cardiff Tidal. The video is dated September '91 so I wonder what train the Automotive Traffic was carried on? Unless new workings were introduced after the publication of my WTT? Any ideas?.

About a third of the way down has a photo Dated 10th September 1991 showing a working listed as: "6V92 Mossend - Exeter Riverside" Which does not appear in the 1991-1992 section PF WTT, so must have been introduced after it was published?

Looking at a PF for 11/05-27/09 1992 there was a 6V92 05:23 ThSO Mossend - Exeter Riverside (CC/4) - CC/4 is Company/Industrial Minerals.

Looks like the Silcock traffic must have ended late 1991/early 1992 as I have seen pictures of 6V92 and I haven't seen any with car traffic (below);

Having looked through both the Summer 1990 & Summer 1992 PF the reduction in freight traffic is quite startling, clearly showing how the demise of the Speedlink network really decimated the freight services in & around Exeter (both bulk flows & associated trip workings).

Done a bit more digging around...

The automotive traffic, mostly Fords from Halewood, appears to have continued well into the 1990s

Dated 1994, the caption gives the train as 6C46 From Newport Alexandra Dock Jn.

Interestingly in 1991 6C46 did exist and ran SX from Cardiff Tidal. So, I reckon the cars were worked from Halewood to South Wales on RFD Automotive services before continuing to Devon on 6C46 which, as mentioned in the previous posts also carried empty scrap wagons.

6V92 was the down equivelent to 6S67 MWFO 04:52 St Blazey S.S. - Mossend N.Y. It must have been introduced sometime in the late summer/autumn of 1991 as it did not appear in the WTT. It carried empty China Clay wagons and Ferry Vans.

officer dibble, any chance you could post the relevant timings for 6V92 from PF for 11/05-27/09 1992?

Interesting to learn that the car traffic did continue, albeit via a feeder service from South Wales, thanks for that.

I have done some further digging as this was an interesting flow. Looking into a PE for Summer 1992 there was a 6V91 SX 19:00 Garston Speke T.C. - Bridgend Fords' Sdgs service, with a 6M78 SX 22:30 Bridgend Fords' Sdgs - Garston Speke T.C. operating in the other direction. 6V91 was booked to run around in Newport A.D.J. and then recess at East Usk N.Y. from 01:30 - 04:20 (presumably to attach/detach traffic). 6M78 ran direct to East Usk N.Y. and recessed from 00:29-01:25 (one presumes again for attach/detach purposes).

Both 6V91 & 6M78 were routed via the Marches route through Abergavenny & Hereford.
