"R" means that the replacement can be relied on for non-emergency situations, ie it's guaranteed that it has actually replaced the signal to danger (there's proving back to the signalbox, etc.). I wonder, has convention on this changed over the years? For example, I've seen plenty of sims with user worked level crossings protected only by "E" switched signals, when as far as I have learnt so far you shouldn't rely on "E" switches except in emergencies. I don't think that "standard" is adhered to, because (As fas as I can recall) all the replacement buttons at Victoria ASC use the letter R, but only a handful can actually be relied upon. (Actually, by now most of the letters have rubbed off so these are just blank buttons!) Log in to reply |

Until recently (ish) - only 'E' buttons were available to Devs. Since the advent of loader, both E and R are possible, Although the only difference as far as SimSig is concerned is the label.

Early IECCs had "E" buttons even for signals that could be relied upon - usually those SSI-controlled though there may have been more. These days as most/all new interlockings are electronic, they can all be relied upon so they would all be labelled R and E would very slowly become obsolete. Basically, if the wheels or axles of the train are too hot, it will sound an alarm and warn the signallers to tell control to take it out of service. While we're on this subject, what is the "H" control on Carlisle?I've found the answer myself.
