Does anyone know where I can find details of all railway fatalities in the UK, listed by year? The data would need to include the locations. Does such a document even exist?

Thanks.

Is this something that could be found under a Freedom of Information request? Thinking RAIB or BTP would surely have a record of all fatalities? Not sure if they are under FOI requests or not though

Network Rail also come within FOI from 1 April, though in reality they've tended to behave as though they were for some considerable time now.

I'm not sure if the RAIB would have a complete set- aren't they only notified if a fatality is something other than trespass or suicide?

That's what I was unsure of about RAIB whether they were still notified of suicides etc even if no investigation needed. Then I thought of BTP who I would think definitely would have complete list. Hadn't realised Network Rail were already acting as they were covered by FOI so thanks for that Peter.

The Network Rail Sucide Prevention Group sends out an email with the statistics every month, though I'd expect it only goes to NR employees who have a need to see it. Is there any data in particular you're looking for?

There is also the Office of Rail Regulation in their safety role who should know, possibly more so than the RAIB who do not investigate every death on the railway.

The issue may be the cost involved in compiling the information you want.

Someone's already asked a similar question back in July 2012 and the answer indicates that the information is published in the annual report.

I am specifically looking for data on how many fatalities ocurred between London Paddington and Reading last year.

The NRSPG figures are only broken down to Route level so would cover the whole of the Western Route - would those do? If not then I suggest waiting until April and making a Freedom of Information request to Network Rail. The Western Route RSIM team will certainly hold the figures you seek.
