What route taken for 1993 WTT Paddington to Edinburgh? 12/09/2015 at 10:08 #75840

Morning all,

I'm currently playing a 1993 timetable for the Edinburgh SimSig and have 1S59 entering the sim which is the 06:00 Paddington to Edinburgh booked to arrived at 13:54.

Three things interest me here; 1. I didn't know there was any Anglo Scottish services from the London area as in London Terminals NOT originating from either Euston or Kings Cross, 2. What route did that 1S59 take to complete the journey/was there a return too and 3. Was there any other such services in that timetable?

Appreciate any help here all

News to me but at a guess it's be Pad to Brum via Oxford then WCML. I assume you have it entering from Carstairs.

That is correct.

It ran via Brum then WCML to Carstairs and used the cord rather than a reverse.

Yes, Didn't think there was any Anglo Scottish services apart from Kings Cross and Euston?

Early on Cross Country services served London Paddington to various destinations one of which was Edinburgh.

I have a feeling Liverpool was another one.

Can't remember about Edinburgh services but there was definitely a Glasgow Central - Paddington return working in that era (1V98 16:10 Glasgow Central - Paddington) which followed the same route in reverse from Carstairs. Used to be a loco-hauled set with a Cl. 47 when it was off the wires.

PS Same question was raised by Ajax103 back in 2010 (see http://www.SimSig.co.uk/index.php?option=com_kunena&catid=79&id=1130&Itemid=0&view=topic&limitstart=0) with the same answer!

There was also a Glasgow and/or Edinburgh to Harwich train in the 90s, which went round the NLL. I think it was a Named Train, can't recall the name though.

The named train you are referring to Peter was 'The European' which originally was 1S85 0717 Harwich Parkeston Quay - Glasgow Central which ran via Ipswich - Stowmarket - Ely - March - Peterborough - Grantham - Nottongham - Alfreton & Masfield Parkway - Chesterfield - Sheffield(loco ran round) & went forward via the Hope valley calling at Stockport - manc'r Piccadilly - Manc'r Oxford Road - Bolton - Preston(diesel off & electric on) then forward via Lancaster - Oxenholme - Penrith - Carlisle - Carstairs - Motherwell & Glasgow Central. The return working ran as 1E87 & followed the same route back. This train usually brought a SF based Cl.47/4 to Sheffield/Manchester areas. However in 187 that train ran as The Rhinelander & terminated at Manc'r Piccailly & thats was roughly when The European was diverted to run up the GE mainline to Stratford & over the NLL diesel hauling AC eletric 'dead in tow' to Willesden where the AC eletric loco went forward. This train conveyed Mk.2 Air-Con coaches with a Mk.1 buffet car on it.

There used to be Scottish services from St. Pancras (the Settle & Carlisle was built to give the Midland their own route to the border), which have long since been withdrawn- I don't know exactly when. Does anyone know if there were ever any from Marylebone?

There are plenty of Anglo-Scottish that terminate/originate at other places than London, but you're correct that these days Kings Cross and Euston are the only London termini with trains to Scotland.

Thames-Clyde Express, not sure when it ceased to serve London but it survived into the 80s as Glasgow - Nottingham, generally a Cl 81-85 and 45 over the hills, caught it many a time.

Marylebone in the 50/60s played host to the Starlight Express. These workings from both Edinburgh and Glasgow offered cheap overnight fares at weekends and these trains became very popular for a time.On some occasions ,such as Glasgow fair several trains would operate with a similar story from Edinburgh. The Glasgow service was WCML to Carlisle ,then S&C,then Sheffield and the GC.The Edinburgh trains used the ECML to York then Sheffield and the GC.

Several of these services appear in the 79/80 Carlisle timetable, loco change takes place there.

EDIT: Wikipedia, as unreliable as it is, refers that from May '13 one of the Northern Rail S&C services continued to Nottingham, but that doesn't appear on RTT now.

Up until the late 90's there were cross country services that originated and terminated at Paddington. Once Virgin won the franchise they no longer served Padd direct with enough trains to change on/off to at Reading if you wanted to go to Padd.

I remember Virgin running some services to Paddington right up until 2003.

The 2002 and 2006 network maps linked to at the top of this page on RailUK shows the extent of the reduction of Cross Country services following Operation Pumpkin.

There is indeed and it has run through to Nottingham on Sundays since May 2013. I've actually travelled on it more than once in that time, so can vouch that it does run through. 'Twas also yours truly who put it on Wikipedia - something I don't do unless I know that the facts are correct! The daily St Pancras - Nottingham - Glasgow Central "Thames - Clyde express service incidentally ran until May 1977, when it was cut back to start/finish at Nottingham (though the overall number of Nottingham - Carlisle/Glasgow trains was increased to compensate). Ran via the MML (though it usually went via Corby, Manton & Old Dalby in the days when the latter was open), Erewash Valley, Sheffield and Cudworth to Leeds, then onwards over the S&C and GSWR lines to Glasgow.

Don't forget that there was also a Kensington - Glasgow / Edinburgh coming from Brighton (via Oxford and Manchester).

There were also Waterloo - Edinburgh (Eurostar connection) services for a while (route West london - North London - Kings Cross incline).

Finally a Liverpool St - Glasgow / Edinburgh happened one Easter when the European (as mentioned above) was diverted in and out of Liverpool St.

Glad the timetable is generating interest

regards
Bill

Blame that on me assuming it would be a weekday thing - when in fact "strange" workings like that probably are more likely to be a Sunday affair!

Ta for the info!

I understand the last year sleepers ran out of St Pancras was 1975 (but not sure when they came off); I guess they would have been Scottish trains. I recall spending a weekend running around the North and Scotland in the summer of, I think, '75 or '76 and there were no through trains from Pancras then.
