My other half has been up to Darlington today to try and sort out a convalescent home for my ailing father and arrived back at Darlington station at around 16:15 to find out there was no trains in or out due to a serious signalling/electricity problem.
She opted to sharing a taxi down to York to try and get round the problem and duly arrived to find an extra service (probably one that they terminated at York coming up from the Cross)had been laid on. According to Real time trains this was the 1Y90 York to Kings Cross. They have now been stopped because of a body on the line at Sandy. Another 90 minutes before they move again according to the train guard. Hope she gets home in time for breakfast....and I thought I had a bad day in the office. The signallers working on the East Coast Main Line have earned their money today to sort that mess out.

Could well be. I know we both went up there on Sunday and got diverted via the Hertford Loop both ways because of Engineering work, but also got stopped outside Doncaster because of an earlier broken down train. First time I have been round the loop and quite interesting to see the new signalling that some on here have been talking about.
What happened yesterday?

"Incident" at ST Neots believed to be a person hit by train but they seem to have started using the term "BTP are dealing with an incident" or similar recently.

Just had a look on RealTimeTrains. 1Y90 now showing as cancelled between Newark NorthGate and Kings Cross. Meanwhile 1Y47 and 1E23, from Newcastle and Edinburgh respectively, cancelled throughout due to a power failure.

I note there is a 1G19 on RTT as an STP working (1700 YRK - KGX) due KGX 1904 bvut currently late. Presumably this is a substitute for 1Y90.

Yes I saw that also, but it wasn't cancelled as they are further south than that. Could mean that the re scheduled stops had been cancelled. I see that the North bound lines have now opened again so maybe I might see her in the not to distant future providing the boys at the Cross don't have something else to deal with......mind it has been nice and quiet........ but will probably get a right ear bashing when she does eventually arrive......

I believe one of our Sydney members may have been on this train. He mentioned the incident at Doncaster. What a coincidence!

Small world, but I believe the loop was used all day so it might not have been the same train.
We did come back from Bishop Auckland on Sunday and got pelted with stones from some line side idiots just after it left there. First time that I have had that happen to me as far as I can recall and caused some alarm to people on board. Cannot understand what pleasure they derive from doing it and a call to the box to alert someone was obviously not going to help in catching them.

Complete loss of signalling between East Cowton and Ferryhill.

The exact same thing happened on 4th September, when 8m of cable was burnt through by vandals. My guess would be that they took out the TDM cable from Tyneside IECC to the interlockings in the Darlington area.

That's 3 fatalities in 3 days on the southern ECML - Enfield Chase on Sunday, St Neots yesterday and now today's just north of Sandy.

The industry is moving away from terms such as "fatality" or "person struck by a train" in favour of "emergency services dealing with an incident" in an effort to reduce 'copycat' acts - apparently this move has reduced the number of fatalities in Australia (that's what we were told anyway).

Unfortunately I've experienced a fatality first-hand this year and it was not a pleasant experience, but something most drivers expect will happen at some point in their career.

I was on the train that broke down (yes, I'm the "Sydney" member Barry alluded to). 1S09 failed near Scrooby. It sat there for about 40mins until the driver effected repairs enough to limp the train into Donny where it terminated.

We still use 'person injured by a train' or 'person struck by a train' in outside communications in Sydney. They don't seem to want to use 'fatality' until it's confirmed beyond doubt, or they have to justify longer than the usual 2-3 hours to reopen the line.

Yes, the loop was in use much of the day (I came back from Liverpool Street so don't know if it was still in use late evening).

At least some Cambridge services were terminating at Stevenage in the Up Fast platform. I got off one to see the shunt signal at the north end (to get the train across to the Down Fast and thence towards Hitchin) was already off. The return working would have been carrying passengers on that shunt route.

There's a *lot* of Up direction signals on the Down Hertford. Far more than you'd see on most right-direction lines!

A popular euphemism where I'm from is "police action" or "police incident". The New York City Transit Authority uses the radio code "12-9" for "person(s) under train". It doesn't necessarily mean a fatality, but that's usually the outcome. Anyway many NYC area railway enthusiasts will refer to such incidents "12-9's" if they occur on the subway or not.

In a related area I learned that whenever you hear a traffic report that mentions a backup due to a "disabled vehicle" on any major road bridge that usually means there was a suicide. For years I had wondered why so many people seemed to have the rotten luck of having their vehicle breakdown in the middle of a bridge and now I know it's a different kind of breakdown altogether!

A recent change on the underground means we now refer to such incidents as "a person on the track" (not to be confused with tresspasser on the track). This change was made partly to avoid publicising the issue for long periods of time - some lines can take several hours to fully recover the service afterwards. Unlike the national network, we have yet to adopt extra signage on platforms (e.g. for the samaritans). Apparently research suggests that the signs have not - so far - reduced the incidents.

There are a lot of signals on the stretch of lines between Hertford North and Stevenage because it is being used as a test bed for ERTMS and the proposed ATO through the Thameslink Core in London. In normal use these Signals are not used and only the conventional signalling is used. During testing, the conventional signalling is switched out.
Professionalism mean nothing around a bunch of Amateur wannabees!

And a 317 into the buffer stop on Platform 11 at the Cross I believe tying that up for quite a while. Another day in the life of a signaller.
I am repeating my journey up North next weekend......surely lightening does not strike in the same place twice or was that three times?

The Hertford loop diversion is on all day Sunday. Various retimings from the public timetable but online sources will be OK.
Should be around 15 minutes over expectations (ie 1 hour to Peterborough)

Motherwell had it bad on Monday, brief total loss of power and then Panel 4 (Motherwell station) was out for over 6 hours with all WCML going via Holytown

I was on a diverted 390 but that then went towards Shotts at Holytown (fortunately not very far !) The pan was still on the wires so could reverse back to Holytown and have the route reset.

Either a human route error or M494 was already set towards Shotts when the whole lot went down. Even so the driver took it, I don't think there are any advance indications of route and a fair bit of shrubbery on the approach so could be seen quite late.
