Opening saved RTT pages from DownThemAll 05/12/2015 at 23:10 #78440

Hello all,

I've been using saved pages from RTT for my Waterloo Sunday TT, as it has diversions, so I saved Waterloo, Wimbledon, Epsom etc, all the hotspots I need and got it via DownThemAll. I also saved the departures page from 0000 - 2359 so I could work through the entire list in order.

The handy thing was I could open this saved page, click on a headcode, say 2C46, and it will bring up the saved page I did and shows 2C46 Waterloo - Reading via Twickenham. (I can't remember if 2C46 is to or from Reading, I'm not on the PC, it is just an example, so no correction PM's please ;))

Anyway the next time I go on to do more work, it no longer does this, instead it now shows up the upcoming Sunday schedule, mine is for October. Why has it suddenly decided not to bring up the saved pages as it did before? I tried clicking on a 2Z headcode, and just comes up with schedule not found. If I go offline, it just tells me I've gone offline. The departured saved page works, but instead I have to go to the Waterloo folder where I saved the individual service pages and find the schedule myself, which takes longer than how it worked a couple of days ago.

I haven't moved anything, and after a restart of the PC, it's still the same. Is there anyway of forcing it to stop going onto RealTimeTrains and go back to opening the saved files?

Any help is appreciated!

James.

DownThemAll appears to be a utility to download a list of links on a page, not the page content itself. At a guess, RTT dumps historical data after a certain time, so any links to schedules (say) a month ago will no longer work. Just guessing.

A couple of things to note about RTT if using for SimSig timetables: the website does a lot of guesstimation and interpolation to try to pad out schedules, but doesn't always get it right. Secondly, note that the path and line columns are back to front. A useful resource to be sure, but just watch for its quirks. OpenTrainTimes is much better at presenting the data as provided by NROD.

Are you sure it ever used your saved files? My suspicion is that DownThemAll didn't rewrite any of the links, so while you might have downloaded both the overview and the individual train timetables, all the links on the overview page were still pointing to realtimetrains.co.uk on the web, which worked only as long as RTT still held the data for that date.

You need to use some other program, e.g. HTTrack.

If you're using the Windows GUI, after creating a new project, you need to enter the URLs of the overview pages you want into the box for "Web Adresses: (URL)", e.g. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/HNTRDRS/2015/12/08/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt.
Then, under "Set Options..." -> "Scan Rules", use the following rules:
+*.png +*.gif +*.jpg +*.jpeg +*.css +*.js -ad.doubleclick.net/*
+*www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train*
--disable-compression

You might also want to raise/remove the download bandwith limit on the "Limits" page.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

You are right Geoff, the data does indeed clear but sometimes I notice a week later it's gone, so I used DownThemAll and downloaded all the pages to folders, so all of Waterloo is in one, Wimbledon in another etc.

I'm sure it was reading offline, for example the main deparutes/arrivals page URL is:

file:///C:/Users/James/Desktop/Wimbledon%20and%20Feltham/Realtime%20Trains%20_%20Departures%20from%20London%20Waterloo.htm

When clicking on a headcode, say 1D32, the URL would then read:

file:///C:/Users/James/Desktop/Wimbledon%20and%20Feltham/Waterloo/advanced%20(1D32).htm

I remember seeing this, and realtime times would show on the right too, as I saved it that evening on the day itself (4th October). As of 2 days ago, it now shows:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Y40325/2015/10/04/advanced

Obviously the web link but it appears as 'South West Trains service departing on 4th October 2015' Not entirely true, as doing the same for 1B55 as an example shows '1B55 1754 London Waterloo to Poole South West Trains service departing on 4th October 2015', but on the 4th October it was Waterloo to Havant & Bournemouth, not Poole.

As for it not being accurate, I found doing the overnight Twickenham Rugby extra's were a nightmare to figure out. There was a 2Z that terminated at Waterloo with no obvious onward working, and all the ECS's to Wimbledon C.S.D were given 5 minutes to do Clapham Junction to Wimbledon C.S.D via East Putney, with no timing locations in between (In fact all the pass times were registered up to P6 at Clapham, and no actual arrival times at Wimbledon, which makes me think they went to Clapham Yard instead maybe?)

Jan - So whilst they all linked to my C drive as linked in my URL examples, do you think maybe that once the RTT data clears it will still be effected perhaps?

Okay, in that case my theory doesn't seem to hold - without looking at the files I have no idea though what else could have gone wrong.

I downloaded a whole load in 2014 for someone working on CSCOT using that program and they still work, so it is/was possible.

I'll try again later and see what happens and report back what I did.

Thanks Peter,

Not had any problems before but then generally I've done it all in a month rather than 2+ months. It's not the end of the world, just it makes it a lot easier, rather than having to go to the folder with the individual services and look for them
