Looks like that RM's 325 trains have started running again.

Have seen them passing through Biggleswade several evenings recently. Maybe they've been running for a while; just not at the right time for me to notice.

Royal Mail came off rail about 2002. GBRf re-started a limited Christmas service on the WCML in 2004 which led to a small-scale return to rail. By 2010 when DBS won the contract there were 7 trains each day linking Princess Royal Distribution Centre, Willesden, the Royal Mail Terminal at Warrington and the Royal Mail Terminal at Shieldmuir. That is now the basic pattern with extra services at peak times like Christmas. In June 2013 a further PRDC - RM Low Fell round trip was introduced. The basic pattern is operated by the Cl. 325 units although things like the Christmas extras are often loco-hauled formations.

It may be that some of the PRDC - Shieldmuir services have been re-routed via the ECML during the WCML closure at Lamington. The normal ECML service is off PRDC at 22:45, crew change at Doncaster 01:12 - 01:14 and arrive Low Fell 02:59. The return working is Low Fell 21:43, Doncaster 23:06 - 23:08, PRDC 01:52

Edit: A quick look at Real Time Trains does show that on the sample day I checked, the single scheduled PRDC - Shieldmuir service ran via the ECML.

There are no regular loco-hauled mail trains. The only mail trains running use the WCML and ECML, and are formed of 325s. There's normally an extra daily service in December that uses a 90 and wagons (don't know they type, sorry), but that's it.

There was a picture of a similar rake at Carlisle taken on 02/12/14 which was published in the Railway Magazine I received in early January 2015. I have a scan of the shot but don't want to post it publicly because of the copyright implications. The shot shows a Cl. 90 and about 15 or 16 of what look like VGAs.

Is there a reason they stopped having locos hauling the 325s?

(The link below shows 87002 doing such at Christmas time in 2008 - it's mine)

I think the units were hauled while the Motor vehicles (one per unit) were refurbished.
