(from the BBC news site) Looks like a fun-filled Easter Monday for a fair number of signallers then! "Work is ongoing to fix all the problems on the railways caused by Storm Katie, but anyone planning to travel today should definitely check in advance with National Rail Enquiries. Among the issues, flooding in the Ash area of Surrey means trains are not currently running between Guildford and Aldershot. Trees have also fallen on the line in multiple locations on the Southern Network with the following lines disrupted: - Three Bridges and Horsham - South Croydon and Oxted - Purley and Caterham - Chichester and Havant An obstruction on the line at London Bridge is causing disruption to trains to and from the station. This is expected to continue until 10:00 BST. There is also an obstruction on the line at Horley causing disruption to trains between Redhill and Gatwick Airport. Some services travelling towards Gatwick Airport are being diverted and delayed by up to 30 minutes. This is expected to continue until 15:00. Gatwick is also warning of problems on the roads around the airport so anyone trying to catch a flight should definitely leave extra time. And London Overground services are currently unable to run between Watford Junction and London Euston because of an obstruction on the line. This is expected to continue until approximately 21:00." That could have been very nasty! I'm assuming it was the wires that broke the window. If the wire had whipped in through the window and caught a passenger a) they would have received considerable physical injury from the cable whipping around and b) if the lines still happened to be energized before the safety trips operated, they could have been seriously injured (severe burns, heart/organ damage etc) or killed by the high voltage - and by the high current which is more dangerous. Remember children it's the volts that jolts, but it's the mils that kills! Why does the OHLE keep coming down on the ECML? Something to do with the catenary support posts being spaced as far apart as possible to save money perhaps? Strange how the catenary gets pulled down so much less frequently on the WCML - where the catenary support posts are closer together! Interesting coincidence is that! At the location it collapsed it appears not to be headspan but individual stanchions, so probably slightly simpler to fix and less disruptive. Hopefully all fixed by tomorrow morning. I came across this post a while ago by someone who was involved in the original installation. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Thanks for that Peter, very interesting. Kinda shows how Chinese whispers can become accepted fact if they're repeated often enough. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the situation where 75mph max speed OHLE is expected to cope with frequent 125mph trains. Guess it copes pretty well all things considered. Log in to reply |

For various reasons I've been keeping a record of the train delays (arr Finsbury Park) of the train I catch most days (whether I catch it or not) and since 11/2/13 it's been cancelled 10 times. I have not recorded the reasons. Of those that ran delay minutes are 2715 which equates to around 3.5 mins per day. So it's indicative of the level of problems we have on the ECML GN outer suburban. This is a good site for finding data on trains, this is for my train home and shows that in the last 3 months it was on time just over 50% of the time. http://raildar.co.uk/l/dcb4 Though I think that maybe "on time" in railway speak, I'd need to investigate. Apologies - My post above claimed my train was never on time, but using Peter's excellent link, I checked my usual train from Kings Cross and discovered that it was actually on time arriving at Biggleswade the grand total of twice this year - once in January and once in March...........!
