Cripes! Bet that might have done some damage to the signalling there because of the extra voltage.

So what happened was that the lightning struck a metal canopy covering a passenger walking built between the tracks. The walkways are how passengers reach the platform from the cross streets to the east and west. The lightning strike caused the canopy to collapse onto the tracks where it came into contact with the energized third rail. This electrified the entire canopy structure, causing sparks to erupt along its full length.
