Can anyone explain how to discover a signal number. As an example when I get a message saying train waiting at red signal number...none of the signals appear to have numbers to them. Maybe someone can assist with this.

Under Options, ensure "right click cancels route" is unticked; then right clicking on a signal will bring up a little menu, at the top of which will be the signal number.

A very nice feature added with the loader is that you can leave the option ticked and use Shift+Right Click to open that same menu, if you prefer (as I do).

Also, the Train List (f2) tells you, in the location column, approximately where the train is - I find this more useful than the signal number for locating the stopped train on-screen.

There are also a lot of signal plans held on the Wiki if you check the relevant simulation manual.
