Evening all,

Just been looking on RealTimeTrains for the 3rd and 4th of June to see what is being planned in terms of extra trains for the UEFA Champions League final which is to be held in Cardiff on the 3rd. Well, I expected a *few* STP workings but I never saw coming what is planned for the early hours of Sunday 4th June: it looks as if GWR and Arriva Trains Wales will be paying a lot of money in overtime wages for a lot of drivers. I think NR (or whoever provides the train despatchers at Cardiff Central) will be paying quite a bit in overtime as well. Presumably security will also be on duty so quite an expensive night by the looks of things.

As I write this post GWR, for example, is shown as running 4 trains an hour between Cardiff Central and Paddington all night with the last one from Cardiff Central booked to leave at 0400hrs to arrive 0618hrs! There are also a few ECS workings back from Reading TCD and London Paddington: ECS workings from Paddington include 5Z80 & 5Z85 (0115 Paddington - Landore TMD, arr. 0440, and 0300 Paddington - Swansea, arr. 0547 respectively). There are also very late workings up to Hereford (2 tph, last at 0304hrs) and Gloucester (2tph, last at 0340) and Bristol Temple Meads (last at 0205hrs).

It looks to me as if someone has accidentally gone somewhat overboard with the train planning......

Cardiff Central, 04th June: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced/CDF/2017/06/04/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt <= see 0000 - 0630!

Although I can see a lot of that getting possibly knocked off due to a lack of passengers toward the end of the night it is interesting to note that some of those late ECS workings from Reading are pathed as 165/166.....!

Any thoughts??!

Dave

Things have changed since the fear of terrorism! They need to have the crowds moved away as quickly as possible. Would overtime be covered by expected patronage? Do tickets to the grounds cover public transport?

For the love of trains and signalling.

It has already been looked at for a timetable and unfortunately it can't be done at the moment following the resignalling last christmas, in particular the altered track layout from the East end, which now allows for direct running into platforms 0, 1 & 2 as well as the addition of platform 8 and capacity improvements on Taff Panel. The tight turnarounds can't be accomplished running via the current West end reversals that we have. This event is the first major test for the new layout,

GWR have exclusive use of platforms 3 & 4 as well as the relief lines to Llanwern West Jcn
ATW have exclusive use of P 0 1 & 2 , as well as a couple of Charters and the main lines as far as Llanwern Valleys & Vale of Glamorgan recast late Saturday evening with through services to/from Cardiff Bay
AXC are running 2 later services to Birmingham and an ECS positioning move to provide stock for resumption of the normal Sunday Service

I would love to do a 48 hour TT for this event but it is not possible, that being said there could be a few timetables for the other sims in the offing. Watch this space as the saying goes.

I've written a timetable for the Wales v South Africa game last November, which was the last time a major event timetable was used on the old layout. It's nowhere near as busy as this event, but still pretty hectic in places.

Will be released soon- possibly tonight if I've got time to sort it out.
