Disruption - swapping diagrams about on different stocks 04/06/2017 at 16:05 #95642

Hi all,

I've recently got stuck into the saved game where nothing has moved for 3 hours.

I'm aware of the basic tricks in the book of getting services back to time, but how does it work with units being taken off their diagrams and taking another unit's to get out of the quagmire?

For example: It's now 10am in the sim. I've got 2F09 (0711 Paignton - Exmouth) in platform 2 at Paignton, but another train - 2J89 (0700 Barnstaple - St James Park) is stuck at Barnstaple and it should be at Paignton at this very time after going through a few headcodes.

These are also different stocks and formations (2x150s v 2x150 + 1x153).

Is there anything preventing me from swapping them, considering that mileage / trains needing to be in the shed for an exam isn't an issue in SimSig?

Cheers!
Joe

I'll put my GWR control hat on....

If you're going to take exams, crew and fuel out of the equation, then there isn't any significant reason that you couldn't swap a 2/150 for a 2/150 + 1/153 on the Devon Metro - the only consideration may be "what does the 153 do later in the day?" - You do get the occasional 153 attached during the peaks only that then detach and form something entirely different at some point later in the diagram. If they stay together for the whole day then swap away. If not, then you could split it off and leave it at St Davids for a bit and then re-attach it to the 150 that's going the right way.

Other tricks for recovering the Devon Metro -

Terminate Topsham. This does require a shunt on and off the single line towards Exmouth, and I'll be honest I don't know if the necessary reversing location is in the sim. Very common move for us to make; the high frequency on the Exmouth branch means there's almost always a train behind to mop up the passengers. Saves a shed load of time compared with trundling down to Exmouth and back.

Run fast Newton Abbot - Exeter St Davids or vice versa - will gain you at least 10 minutes; more if the train is due to be looped at the Warren. Both Cross Country and High Speed Division are usually happy to put stops in at Dawlish and Teignmouth if there are significant passenger flows for these stations. Tendency is to leave Torre/Torquay/Paignton alone if possible as the long-distance trains rarely serve them.

Never go to Barnstaple late. Anything much more than a 10-15 minute delay to Barnstaple service will see the train cancelled at Exeter. With two passing loops to negotiate you can very quickly snowball delays on the single line and you'll be on for a really bad day. If you've got a spare unit (and crew) run a 2Zxx (where xx is the last two digits of the 2Bxx you've cancelled) down to Barnstaple and back on time; the late runner can layover at Exeter SD until it was due back off on the way from Barnstaple, or become the spare unit with the spare sent to Barnstaple picking up the remainder of its diagram.

Can you swap them back later?
Do they end up back at the same location at the end of the day, eg both end up on depot at Exeter as opposed to one going to Bristol?
