I need to clear a route from Platform 2 at Cardiff Central to URL (to cross a train back into 3, but that doesn't matter). 125 sig won't clear to 127, "No route between selected signals". I have tried it to the shunt-ahead arrowhead and that doesn't work either. I have tried forcing the UR1 to UM and the UM to UR crossovers to reverse and that doesn't help. Incidentally 225 will do this quite happily (from platform 1) ... Log in to reply |

In reality, the trackwork at the east end of the station did not allow this move: the link from platform 1 to the Up Relief crossed the Platform 2 line on a diamond crossing, with a single slip connection that allowed access from P1 to the Up Main. The way the layout is drawn in the simulation reflects the way it was drawn on the panel. An option to shunt from P2 to P3 would be to shunt the train from shunt sig 668 on P2 to the DN relief 694/629 and then from 629 set the route into P3. (694 is the shunt signal in the DN direction and shunt sig 629 is the up direction, both on the DN relief), Some one with more knowledge may beable to advise a better place to shunt to and from Last edited: 05/07/2017 at 13:29 by MarkC Reason: added info Log in to reply |

Afterbrunel in post 96144 said:I need to clear a route from Platform 2 at Cardiff Central to URLApologies for being a bit pedantic but in the spirit of education, "clearing a route" implies to get rid of it, to cancel it. "Clear a signal" is ok (to make it show a proceed aspect) though these days I tend to avoid even that because of the perceived ambiguity with routes. Just say "set a route" and all is, ahem, clear! Thank you, but I shall continue to clear for the next train, of course by lowering my boards.

It's dated (IIRC) 1961. It was definitely issued for the resignalling with colour lights in connection with the Clacton electrification. And it has several references to 'lowering' signals!!... Ken Did you "lower" semaphore signals in upper quadrant areas, where the signal was actually raised, as well as in lower quadrant areas like the GWR / WR? Chris Log in to reply |

Absolutely; in accordance with the 1950 Rule Book, where it is explained that references to lowering signals includes clearing them [ok I can't remember the exact terminology and I am away from home so I can't look it up) by other means.

Wording from my Bluebell Rule book (1955 based) although within the Electric Token Block instructions. "References to the lowering of Fixed Signals also cover the placing otherwise than by lowering (e.g. by raising) of such signals to the "Clear" position or by displaying a less restrictive aspect." When I was on my signalling course 100 years ago in Crewe we had magnetic semaphore signals on the classroom whiteboard. The instructor (foolishly) invited me to demonstrate something, so I cleared the signals as lower quadrant. There were some mutterings from the instructor about defective signals.
