Hi all,

Running this sim at the moment, and have just encountered a track section failure in platform 1 at Ilkley. My question is that were this to happen at such a terminus station, would trains be authorised past the signal at danger into the platform, or simply held to use the other platform upon it becoming free?

Hi,

The general rule - at least in my somewhat dated experience - is that you should divert a train onto other lines during times of failure, if that is possible e.g. where there is a tcf on the fast lines then use the slows. This ensures you still use the security of the signalling system rather that introduce risk by talking trains past signals at danger

I don't know Ilkley or the sim the sim in question but I feel almost certain that you would use other platforms. If the two lines are in a bay, then you would use the next train into the unaffected platform to examine the line. At manned stations too you would have the option of having the line examined on foot by a "responsible person" possibly one of the station staff.

There are places in my experience in which the local instructions demand that you put in a form of "working by pilotman" if you wish to use a platform affected in this way as a platform at a terminal station could be regarded as a single line.

This is purely a technicality and would almost never happen in practice because it is so impractical and probably add to the delay rather than save any time.

So, use other platforms when you can.

In the situation at Ilkley, providing the line is examined and confirmed to be clear, you could use the permissive working/subsidiary aspect to route trains in if the location of the TCF allows this. I don't know of the procedure to follow from the signalling side, but I know its something that was done at Crewe P1 for quite some time due to repeated TC issues.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

Other than telling the driver, not much:

TS11 Reg. 9.2 said:
You may clear a subsidiary signal or a position-light signal in place
of the main aspect or indication if a stop signal is held at danger
by:
• a failure
• a disconnection
• a failure of other signalling equipment.
You must tell the driver what is happening.
The only restriction given is that the train must be normally permitted to proceed under the subsidiary aspect.

I don't think they were required to tell the driver in the Crewe situation as it's a permissive platform for all movements (PP) anyway.
