Update 29th April 2018.

Plenty has been going on with the training runs plus the 1 train per hour to/from Manchester Airport. This week (30-04) the Yorks/Leeds services will return Blackpool Crewed only.. So will be 2 trains per hour to/from Manchester Airport and York.

6th May 2018 from 21:00hrs with hope the OHLE will become live. There has been a delay on the live date due to tweaks needed to be made and also regarding a 'missing' neutral section.. Once the OHLE is live and kicking at 25k we hope to see Northern 319s and VT Pendolinos (Overnight Runs) on test runs between Blackpool North and Preston. Once all complete a full new timetable will commence from 20th May 2018.

Images of the OHLE Notices Provided in thread below.

Being too lazy to look it up myself, I take it that the testing indicates that Virgin will be running intercity services on that line. If so, what's the intended route - Scotland to Manchester Piccadilly (and perhaps further south) via Bolton? I would say it was obvious, but having a Pendolino running via Oxford Road into Piccadilly platforms 13/14 seems a bit of a stretch of my imagination, given how busy that bit of line is!

(Or perhaps it's just for northbound ECS moves from Longsight, or simply a sensible case of checking it works now, rather than finding out it doesn't in ten years time?)

I'm not sure that conclusion holds. I don't think I've seen anywhere a stated interest in running that way. It would be an interesting diversionary route, but that's about all.

Perhaps instead of London to Scotland via the Birmingham loop they could send some via the Manchester loop. Though I'm not sure a Pendolino would fit in either 13/14 at Piccadilly or in Oxford Road, so I'm not sure what they would achieve.

More likely that a Pendolino has a high draw and they are testing with the largest power draw likely to go that way, and with Pendolinos spending the night at Longsight I'm sure it's not too much trouble to borrow one.

VWC are testing just the OHLE.
They will look to make four runs over 12 & 13th with repeated full power acceleration + boost and braking to draw as much power as possible and test resilience. So case of running upto 75mph then dropping to 40mph then back upto 75mph.

Pendo is booked for 11-Car, Ex 1P07 Euston to Preston, it will form the four testing trips then once back at Preston with form 5R07 to Lancaster for 1R07 to Euston.

VWC are not looking at adding additional services via Manchester Piccadilly.
It will be a diversionary route along with Chat Moss.

Only ECS services will be via Bolton to/from Longsight Car.M.D.

There used to be (in the era of swallows and class 47s) a morning Manchester to Edinburgh and evening return working via Bolton, but I would imagine more likely they are testing for potential Sunday diversions (when Oxford Road has some breathing space) in case of engineering on the WCML.

Virgin operated passenger services via Bolton until (approximately) 2008. The route was then transferred to TPE, which started Airport- Scotland services.

VT retained route knowledge for diversions (there was a regular 57+390 working on Sunday mornings) but this may have lapsed, as they haven't worked over the line since electrification works began in earnest. The Chat Moss route was wired by that point, and therefore much more attractive as a diversion.

I understand that several 390s are fitted with OHLE test equipment, and this is the main reason they're being used (though I would hope that they will divert this way if the WCML is shut).

VT Route Knowledge did lapse, both from time and changes to the route. When I was learning Manchester-Preston via Bolton one of their trainers at Preston joined us and basically confirmed the above - diversionary and ECS route only, no plans to run regular services that way (and you'd struggle to squeeze them in via central Manchester)

I believe its two, but could be wrong on that figure. However that is why a 390 was the first electric unit to Blackpool.

There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

There were contingency plans for an instrumented Cl390 to come test the wires on the GW if Hitachi hadn't got the IETs working in time for the switch on a couple of years ago.

The OHLE monitoring equipment on them is very sophisticated - so much so that NR use the data in lieu of running their own OHLE test trains.

TransPennine are going over during Feb 2019 I believe. VT are looking to having a couple of ECS's via that way to/from Longsight.
And Northern well maybe try again in May 2019... But some of the Preston/Manchester Picc/Airports could go over to 319s to free up 156/158s. Who knows.

They could, but Northern don't have a load of spare EMUs either - though it seems the route via Bolton will be one of the first to see the new units when they enter service.
