Goods train joining problem at Didcot 10/03/2018 at 16:33 #106605

Hi,

I've run into this problem where 4D22 is heading direction Swindon and waiting to join with 0D22 (a locomotive). I've signaled wrongly 0D22 in behind 4D22, while it should have been in front. Now I am unable o call 0D22 to tell it to reverse, and it do not call me either.
4D22 is still waiting to join, so it goes nowhere. In the mean time this train and locomotive is blocking the route for other trains.

Can I fix this somehow?

Use the options in the F2 Train List to reverse 0D22. You may need to tell it to abandon its timetable first- if you do, remember to re-assign the timetable when its back where it should be, and setting the correct next/current location.

Thank you,

I was able to reverse 0D22 and place it in front of 4D22, however 4D22 is still waiting for 0D22 to arrive and join according to the F2 list...

"Waiting for joining train 0D22"

I've tried to shunt both forward but without luck...

What's 0D22 showing, and where is its next location? If it's in the same place as 4D22, and shunted next to it, go into F2, right click 0D22, Timetable Options-> Edit timetable, click the 'location list' tab, click on the last line of the timetable to highlight it and click 'Set Next/Current location', and press OK to close the editor.

This will set the train's location the same as 4D22's, so it should recognise 4D22 and join it. You may need to reverse/shunt forward 0D22 again to get it to join.

0D22 say "Train 4D22 in front" and 4D22 say "Waiting for joining train 0D22"

Hoggorm, If you click on the headcode of 0D22 bringing up its timetable, what does it say as its current/next location?

Could you attach a save game file that we could have a look at?

Sure! I've attached a savefile. This is with 0D24 and 4D24 but the issue is the same.

And this is the timetable.

0D24 does not see himself having arrived at Foxhall Junction Signal SB6470.

Under F2, Right click the train, Timetable, Run to Another Timetable, and select the last location on its schedule. ( I know others will do this another way, but this is my preferred). You should see it begin to join

Sorry to bump but this still seems to be an ongoing issue. For some reason trains coming out of the coal hole (the 4D's) will not couple unless you take this action. the inbound 6D's seem to work okay.

Have you got any saves or can you at-least mention which timetable (full timetable name (e.g.: Summmer 2005), not a specific train schedule (e.g.: 4D22)) you're having trouble with?

Over the years I have played either of Didcot or SwinDid probably 10 to 20 times with various different timetables and have never ever had any problems I can recall with Didcot Power Station trains and their locos running around at Didcot West End.

I recognise that the problem appears to have occurred in your save (the light loco appears to have ignored the SB6420 location and is now stopped at Signal 949 at Milton Junction), and in the previous save as well, but running what I believe is the exact same timetable (Summer 2005 v4.0) from the start for 4D22 / 0D22 and also from around 04:25 for 4D02 / 0D02 entry at 04:30 and I cannot recreate the same problem. Caveat: No other trains in the immediate area.

One observation however is that on both occasions that this problem occurs, points 8564 is in the reverse position due to a route set over it. This does make me wonder if something internal is happening to cause this problem, but then that doesn't totally make sense to me.

I think I've just worked this out, and sort of recreated it.

933 to 949 normally sets the route via P8564, if available...

but given the location of shunt signal SB6420, the route needs to be forced via P8569 (key P8564 normal / key P8569 reverse)...

else any train or loco actually looking to reverse there will never find the SB6420 location. Alternatively if the Relief Line is available (933 to 951) or failing that then the route to Milton Sidings (whilst this latter route will still be accepted by trains, note that any headcode will disappear but trains/locos should still find the SB6420 location and reverse) then either of those can be used instead, especially to keep the Up Main clear!

NorthernWarrior, if you've got a save from before the one you provided earlier could you please try this as per above and force the route via points 8569 (as per second screenshot) and advise if you still have any problems?

What I'll do is try that with the next 4D out the coal hole. The strange thing is as I noted, doing the same operation with the 6D inbounds, i.e. routing the light engine back on via signals, seems to join the train without issue.

At least there looks to be a workaround, I presume as this is one of the older (oldest?!) simulations, the chances of reworking to eliminate the issue are remote?

Not quite the test you were looking for, but I had the next 4D come out of the coal hole. As I was busy dealing with a TCF through the east end of Swindon station, route locking pretty much everything (we need a virtual MOM to wind the points) and most of the morning peak queued outside, I set up the correct 0D light engine headcode and routed it down to Didcot West.

When I returned from talking trains past two signals, firing off unsignalled backshunting freight trapped on the Up Thru and finding the reversible working from P4/DM at Swindon to Bourton doesn't work, I noticed ARS had put the engine back on the coal train and it was coupling up. So that seems to be the workaround - put the TD in and let ARS do the work.

1. F11 - Incident Control

2. Select Points tab.

3. Use 'Mouse Button' Button to select the offending point(s).

4. Use radio button to crank said points to desired position.

In Zone 6, no one can hear you scream...

Glad to see you’re enjoying your retirement Vern, there’s a few of us from the office on here, some lurk more than others though!

Anywho, it might be the order you’ve set routes for the reversible - I forget the signal numbers off the top of my head, but on the real panel you needed the signal off at South Marston towards Bourton before you can set any of the Reversible routes from Swindon station towards South Marston.

I'll give that a try in a quieter moment James. At the moment, Swindon looks like a TV Outer shift (part 1) gone horribly wrong. Class 7's up the main ahead of Class Ones, 5L36 shunting via Swindon West, just needs a virtual RCM or IO looking over your shoulder. :)

At least I don't have to file an after shift report!
