When browsing through the online tracks chart at www.opentraintimes.com, I just noticed ZERO reminders applied at some sections in the Bristol region, see attached screenshot. What is the pupose of a ZERO reminder? Is it the same as a RUST RAIL reminder?

That is something a Signaller who signallers the Bristol area will have to answer. It is a reminder of some sort. If you look at the sidings at London Cannon Street on the Open Train maps, you will see "WAGN" in siding No 1. I put this in there, as a crippled wagon was left in there during an Engineer's Possession many months ago. The siding also has a reminder set to prevent signalling trains into the siding that will not fit with the wagon there.

I don't think there's a hard rule for the berth descriptions as long as all the required reminders are physically applied if needed. It's not unusual to see the Piccadilly berths showing things like 'A142', '2323' or 'UNIT' when things are berthed there or during times of disruption. They also sometimes 'spoof' berths when there is a wait between an inbound and outbound working - '*A75' for example will become 1A75 though I don't know the reason for this - possibly just to stop platform information being displayed too early. Ultimately it's down to the signaller on duty and their preference, though something like ZERO might be a bit of an agreement so everyone uses the same system.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.

When we overnight berth at Charing Cross and Cannon Street, we will put in the out going digit minus the first number as a reminder what the stock makes in the morning, eg '2L10' will be '*L10', but this is a local, link based thing we do, it is not a Rule. We can use '*MON' meaning Berthed Til Monday with its out going digit or time in the rear berth. Also '-B--', '*B**' or 'BERF' meaning berthed stock. Likewise some people put in '-T3-', '*T3*' or ,'*EO*', for Engineer's Possessions, or even the WON number and item for the possession over sussessive berths,'*WON*''-20-','ITEM','*123'. For Line Blockages '*LB*'. Others include, 'BTET' Blocked to Electric Traction, '*TI*' Temporary Isolation, even '*HAP''PY-N''EW*Y''EAR*'. But they are all local specific and are only visual reminders that have no affect on the signalling equipment and do not have to be used. What must be used are Reminder Appilances on the correct buttons to prevent signalled moves, to protect whatever is happening. What has to be realised the World and their spouses can see everything put into TD Berths these days.

I have not seen that used on the Temple Meads workstation. We control to Clifton Down so not put in by us (we don't see those berths on the workstation and I use Trust, not CCF)

Putting the full headcode in too early would have it 'time out' a couple of hours later (certainly at West Hampstead). Driver gets on the train and cant register the radio on GSM-R. Other areas may do this for other reasons.

Customer Info Systems also rely on Train Descriptions- interposing a description at a point ahead of where the train currently is (say, Temple Meads while the train is still approaching Bath) will cause the train to “jump” to Bristol in the system and irretrievably clear it off all the screens up to the new furthest point in the journey it’s been interposed at.

If you're on about what I think you're on about, this is simply following a fault with the Train Describer Links between the signal boxes. When the system is reset, ZERO will appear in all the TD berths, and can't be cancelled in some of them, so will remain until a train is ran through them. (TVSC Signaller)
