Abergele down stoppers overlap 06/09/2018 at 20:42 #111939

Hi,

A train stopped at Abergele for an extended period did not clear its overlap even after 5 minutes, effectively fouling the whole down line.

Is this a sim bug or some reality I couldn't see in the documentation?

Thanks
Jamie

I was the signaller in control of that panel at the time. Resulting overlap prevented keying in the points and effectively blocked the whole down main causing a pileup going through. The train in question called up delayed for 10 mins then called up further delay for 5-10 minutes with the overlap only going out when it was ready to go.

Are you asking about releasing the overlap in front of the train, or clearing the overlap TC behind?

Picture would be more useful than a saved sim. If there was a route set from the previous signal then the overlap would correctly not release. In that case you can usually pull the route and the overlap would eventually drop away.

no routes were set with the train sat in the station. il do a quick rough sketch of what it looked like (minus TDs as i cant remember them)

Here is the sketched image, sketch done over the top of a blank copy of the sim area.

I've attached a picture of the sim at the time. The train won't clear overlap TAE10 which is fouling the line across PAE37. All signals are on.

You mean it didn't release the overlap then. We'll have to wait for Karl on this one. It's a mechanical area and each box is different but there are certainly cases in the real world of overlaps never releasing for certain routes - uncommon but do exist.

As built, there would've been no concept of overlaps in this situation, it would have been down to the signalman to ensure a train in the loop was in clear and at a stand before resetting the road for a following train to pass. (Of course the signalman was present on site and could confirm that visually.) If the locking required the country end points reversed before admitting a train to the loop, it would have been purely mechanical and released as soon as the home was returned to danger.

In mechanical areas, the nearest thing to an overlap was the Clearing Point, which applied only to the first stop signal (originally 1/4 mile, altered to 200yd/183m in the 1980s if I recall correctly). Other signals within the signalbox area had no such safety distance (effectively inner home through to advanced starter all had zero-length overlaps), hence the requirement to clear each in turn as the train approached it if the road couldn't be pulled off all through.

Abergele was set up so calling trains could be overtaken. Whether or not that still happened in later timetables, I really can't imagine money being spent in the quantities required just to remove a bit of flexibility whose presence/absence was in any case irrelevant to safe working.

The Clearing Point was reduced from 440 yards to 200 yards - circa 1983 - where the Distant Signal - was a Colour Light.

It remains today at 440 yards today if the Distant Signal is a Semaphore.

I'd need to see a save game as I can't reproduce this. (Unless you had TORR off and didn't put the bracket back)

the savegame is in the OP as an attachment.

downloaded save to do quick test, f2 shows delayed at the station due to door problems, clears at 20past

I have tried with your save, and the overlap eventually releases at 1928hrs, and this is reproducible. I did not do anything else other than wait in the meantime.

With a clean version of the sim and a couple of test trains it released in a more normal timeframe, so logged on Mantis for Karl to check. Mantis 21570.

I believe Sam pulled the signal & reset the block equipment after the train called in late. (Correct me if I'm wrong. I was operating another panel on the same game.) This could have played a role?

You are correct, i pulled so that i could clear the main line for trains to pass which didnt work.

I can reproduce this. The bug only occurs if a train is TT'd to stop at Abergele- a passing train, or forced TC occupation, won't trigger it.

As #21570 has been closed, I've re-raised this as #21571. Save attached.

Fixed in 4.3 (Which was incidentally deployed from 1A69 on approach to Eaglescliffe.
