What would assist is knowing at what stage the process failed.
There are known issues with being presented with the option of entering card details but that does not seem like your difficulty.

Maybe some screenshots (personal data blanked).

Can you give details of the cards used?
e.g. debit/credit, Visa/Mastercard/whatever, maybe even which banks?

Might want to contact your bank or card issuer. SimSig doesn't handle payments directly - PayPal does it.

Hi Peter,

The part that won't work is when I click "Continue" in PayPal. Once I've entered all my details and everything, it says that it's not working. It asks me to another card but I only have one card. It also said to try again, and I have done - 9 times. It's done this before and it worked when I used my Nan's card but my Nan won't let me buy this one as I don't have my pin number yet for my bank card so I can't take out money to give it her in return. In case you're wondering, I'm trying to buy the Rugby SCC Mulibuy.

Thanks for replying

Heya Geoff,

It's Barclays. I figured it may be because it's a child's account but it's worked on everything else I've used, even Amazon and delivery stuff.

Thanks

What does it say specifically? Is it the card itself that's being declined, or is it saying that you've entered the wrong details?

Hi, it says that it's declined and to try another card and try again. I can't remember exactly what it said, apologies. Thanks

Is it a fresh or new card? Generally most banks tend to have you activate the card at an ATM or shop with your pin before they allow it to be used online. If its a replacement for a expiring or just expired then the pin should be the same. Failing that I would go into your local branch about it and if your bank cant do anything then talk to PayPal.

Is it a cashpoint card? I know when I set up my under 19's with Lloyd there was an option between a cahspoit card which only worked at cashpoints or a normal debit card.

Given the type of account you have said the card belongs to and the bank I can have a very good guess what type of card it is (visa electron), and I can tell you from experiance they are a pain in the backside.

In their own right they are not always valid online it depends on the merchant (in this case paypal) and the type of visa electron it is. I have had one that was very restricted in where It could be used online, and another that when used online behaved as a visa. Your best bet is what Geoff suggested contact your bank.

Hi Sam, it's not really a new card, I think I've had it for about a year now. I am able to purchase other things online though but I don't think I ever have been for PayPal. Thanks

Heya Mark, it's a Visa Debit card, not Electron lol. I will at some point have to ask the bank about using PayPal as it's a child account, I'm wondering if I'm able to unblock it (if PayPal is blocked on Barclay's Child Accounts) or sort something out, idk lol. Thanks

Hey Ben, yeah it looks like your bank is restricting paypal on your account then.

Be aware that PayPal enforce a minimum age limit of 18 to open an account with them. In the past, they have strictly enforced this policy, even in retrospect for users aged over 18 but who opened the account before their 18th birthday.

This age limit does not apply if you opt out of creating a PayPal account when given the choice to do so on the payment screen.

Surely, surely, SimSig offers hours of fun for folk of all ages, hard to find anything that could be "age-related".

True, but I think there are legal issues with young people, debt and liability, and I suspect some banks and traders want to avoid having anything to do with that sort of thing.

It tends to be a contract law thing.

I've tweeted PayPal with a link to this thread and asked them if they have any comment to make that might assist.

PayPal don't allow under 18s to use the service, I suspect the type of card you have from Barclays is actually a Visa Electron, disguised as a Visa Debit (They certainly used to issue psuedo Visa Electrocn cards badged as Visa Debits). To the merchant it is a Visa Electron for all intents and purposes so they will bounce it.

Also if you have repeatedly tried to authorise the same payment through PayPal I wouldn't be surprised if your banks anti-fraud alert went off either.

This is what I do when making a purchase and I have never had a problem.

I didn't think that it had anything to do with PayPal so wouldn't have thought this was causing the problem. Surely it's something else?

All the payment processing is handled by PayPal irrespective of whether you do or don't chose to create an account.

It'll be interesting to see what response Peter gets from PayPal, that's if he gets one. If it is to do with their age restrictions then in this case perhaps a family member could come to the rescue and make the purchase (if they haven’t already done so) and Ben could reimburse them.

It's nothing to do with SimSig. It's PayPal that appears to be blocking. Family member seems the best solution here. I don't think I got a debit card until I was 18! (and I don't feel that old)
