Every now and again I see the term "demic", meaning a loco or vehicle that is out of use. But what's the derivation of the term?

Heard it used in bus operation parlance as well - one of those words no-one ever explains but you quickly pick up and instinctively know what it means.
There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway.
