I'd be surprised if anyone knows anything about this, as it's a local issue, but I'll ask anyway.

At a recent Residents' Association Committee meeting, one of our Councillors, in response to a query, stated that there are no plans for the automation of the Reigate level crossing.
I thought already that an approaching train was responible for the lowering of the barriers, but the above staement would indicate to me that the signalman controls them.
If this is the case, what information does the signalman use? Is it to do with track circuits illuminating on his panel? or does he perhaps get an audible warning of an approaching train from trackside equipment of some sort.

Actually, I can still remember watching the signalman turn a huge wheel to close the gates before barriers were installed.

Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate.

They are manually controlled barriers operated by the signaller on observation of track circuits. Owing to the high usage of the road they are full barriers and will always therefore be controlled by a signaller, if not from Reigate then from wherever control of Reigate eventually moves to (Three Bridges ROC??) utilizing CCTV

I assume that this box will be made redundant when that happens then. A real shame.
I think that it should be kept as some kind of museum piece rather that demolishing it. This location just wouldn't be the same without the signal box.
