I'm asking out of curiosity. Why are some trains (Both freight trains and empty stock) going via Rotherham Central and Tinsley?

I'm always looking up the area on Google Maps, also out of curiosity. I can't see any reasons why some trains don't use the main line. I tried to send 6M00 via the main line because I thought that would be faster, but the driver stopped at Aldwarke and told me he had a wrong route set at signal 450.

They don't have any scheduled stops, and they're all going through Sheffield.

Is there any reasons for it?

Could be a few reasons. One could be route knowledge; another to allow a faster train to overtake (on the main line, while the freight goes via Rotherham).

Similarly for route knowledge, a few passenger trains go via Thrybergh instead of Swinton, even though the latter is a faster route.

As Geoff quite rightly says, a lot of it is to do with route knowledge retention.

For example if it goes pear shaped Cross Country drivers don't sign Beighton Jn to Masbrough Jn, however they sign Tapton Jn Beighton Jn Sheffield & Sheffield to Aldwarke Jn via Woodburn Jn & Rotherham Central

TPE sign Aldwarke Thrybergh & Mexborough as well as via Swinton. 1B52/59 are used to retain route knowledge via Huddersfield, Stalybridge Man Pic and the Airport, these 2 services also can use Woodburn to Aldwarke as well as required (normally 1B52 inbound)

Freight drivers have to keep an extensive knowledge of the area and have been known to request route changes on short notice to keep to keep the knowledge up

Theres a couple of GBRf light runs one in the morning from Peak Forest - Toton - Thrybergh Jcn and return same route. In the afternoon a Doncaster - Barrow Hill and return, The morning run looks like a route learner with the quick turnaround at Thrybergh but the afternoon is booked onto Barrow Hill Depot an back off, so that could be anything, Have GBRF got any heritage still on hire ?? if so that could be a fuelling move or similar if they dont have the correct facilities at Doncaster

Diesel is diesel, surely? But routine exams must be undertaken regularly. If some route-learning happens during the run, that's a bonus.

The fuel Is the same but the pump/attachment used can vary.

Meld: I wonder if GBrf still have any 20s on hire? Most likely those going on the to Harry needle for routine maintenance. 66s would be at Roberts Road.
