Trains leaving the West Yard and which are timetable to re-enter it, are not directed to enter a specific siding.
Generally speaking, when a train exits the yard from one of the Carriage sidings and is timetabled to re-enter the yard, I send it into the other siding.
If a train is to enter the yard after terminating at Exeter, I send it to Carriage sidings 1-6, which is where re-fuelling takes place.

I was just wondering (tongue-in-cheek) whether things would jam up if I were to send every train into only 1 of the 2 sidings, which presumably have a finite length?

Everything that you make will be useful - providing it's made of chocolate.

Not for Exeter West Yard but Clive did put some coding into Euston DCS, UCS and Royston sidings so only a finite amount of stock could leave or be put in at any one time.

Rule of thumb for me. If its timetabled onto Exeter fuel point I put it into 1-6 otherwise I put it in the other one.

The feature is available for any sim author to use. I've certainly put it into other sims.

Any exit or entry point can be associated with a tracked location. If it is, then the location keeps track of how much has entered and exited and won't allow an entry if there isn't room or an exit if there isn't enough rolling stock in there. It only keeps track of total train length, not specific trains or train types.
