Simulation Proposal - Crewe 21/04/2019 at 17:32 #117782

I personally would really enjoy having Crewe in SimSig with it's variety in services. It could be able to chain up to sims such as Staffordshire allowing for plenty of great multiplayer sessions. Having Crewe would also give lots of Timetable variety with some being early BR period and some modern day. Key features of Crewe would be the Heritage Centre (I'm a proud volunteer there!), Crewe Diesel Depot, Crewe Gresty Bridge (DRS) and the Crewe Arriva Traincare.

I would love to see this in SimSig and I'm sure many others would too!

Feel free to discuss below.

Since this thread was started back in 2019, it's been confirmed that Crewe is in development. A sneak peak can be found here: https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/50882?postId=128283

And to add to what Meld has put, its not a small sim by any means, and a lot of things aren't exactly easy to implement (Looking at you Basford Hall Sidings)

Out of curiosity - what is unique about the Basford Hall arrangements? Do they have a particular method of work?

There is rather a lot going on in a rather small area of control. For example, the yard has to be able to handle through trains heading in the Up Direction because its the only way to get from Gresty Lane through to Basford Hall Junction (In one TT, there are a number of trains booked to make this move). There are some not too easy arrangements which are in place between Crewe SSN and Crewe PSB for access into a couple sets of sidings.

Because I don't fancy getting too much abuse from people, and given that Crewe SSN does not have TD stepping, I've done the nice thing and added in TDs alongside appropriate steps (Well, some have been done so far).

Maybe I choose poor works initially, as many of these things aren't too difficult, and maybe a better way of wording this would have been along the lines of its the quantity of what's going on that's maybe the difficult part to comprehend.

Side note, the other day, Elltrain uploaded a excellent mockup of the area, Here, which shows a good overview of the area.

On a more jokey note, I hope we all like 10MPH speed restrictions

Thanks for the comprehensive overview! I have been through Crewe many, many times as it's near my old home town, but never had the chance to particularly go through the freight side/independent lines, nor see the signalling system. I knew it would be complicated, but there is a lot going on there. I wish you well with development, and I'll definitely be a customer.

So will you be modifying the SimSig Absolute Block to Permissive Block? (And what will the indications look like then, given there's provision for 9 in section on the tell-tale instruments?) That will be, er, fun!

I don't know how it gets used in reality, however, due to how short the section is, I see very few use cases for it travelling away from Basford Hall, however, heading the other way, where the signal at the end of the section protects the entrance to the yard, yes, I could see more uses here. For reference, I want to say that the section is somewhere around 500 meters (Not currently at my laptop to look)

The indications will look the same as any other sim with AB, just you'll have a calling on or shunt route also into the section that can be cleared at TOL. I'm thinking in my head that one indication could be to have extra TDs showing that there's more than one in section, however, the track layout doesn't really work for this.

On the panel in the now-closed Derby PSB there existed on some of the goods lines (DGL Leicester Jn - Branston Jn and UGL St Marys - Derby North IIRC) what were known as 'blind berths'. These were a pair of small blue lamps, normally unlit, which illuminated when more than two trains were occupying the relevant signal section (there were two TD berths for the first two trains to occupy). The TD's disappeared but were stored so when the first train departed the signal section the 2nd TD stepped up to the first describer berth and the 3rd (hidden) TD presented itself in the second TD berth. The blind berth lamps remained illuminated until there were no more than two trains in the section. Maybe something like this could be featured in the developing Crewe sim to indicate the presence of more than one train on the Permissive Block lines?

Phil.

PS When the first train to enter the sections I mentioned above passed the controlling signal, the TD actually stepped through the blind berth, so the blind berth lamps would momentarily illuminate before the TD appeared in the 2nd Train berth then stepped to the 1st Train berth.

thanks for the tag and it's such a complex era I can't wait to get my hands on the sim if/when it releases as oh boy its gonna be good,
a major place to have some fun with when disruption happens too with only 12 platforms and some tight layouts it could be fun!

I can't wait for it either. When you consider it would probably link into Shrewsbury sim as well as Staffordshire you could have probably the largest SimSig chain going, both in terms of the number of sims and number of available panels.

It will be ready when it is ready and I look forward to that day if / when it comes.

It would probably connect to Staffordshire, Shrewsbury, Chester, Warrington, Manchester South and Cheshire Lines.

Edge Hill? If it includes the lines up to Weaver Junction.
