I have looked through the previous post for this timetable and did not find a mention of 5C80. This train is timetabled to stop at Tiverton Junction at 1414 and remain there until 1604 and then carry on into Exeter St Davids. However the passing line at Tiverton Junction is occupied by 6J81 until 2154. Is this an oversight?

I am considering a workaround whereby 5C80 passes Tiverton Junction and reverses at signal E653 with 6J81 reversing to signal E639 to ensure there is sufficient space. Does this make sense to you more experienced signallers?

Regards
Keith

I suspect that 6J81 should probably recess in the siding beside the down loop line.

I would concur. I don't have that timetable to hand, but I imagine 6J81 is stabled for some considerable time, while 5C80 sounds like a set of cars put 'inside' for faster traffic to pass (or perhaps to wait until there's platform capacity at Exeter).

Back in the day (this is even before my time... yes, there was such a time!) it would have been quite normal for trains being put inside to reverse into a lie-by. But those lie-bys were invariably single-ended, and there would always be a guard in the bug box at the back of the train to handsignal the driver in. I understand it could be done pretty quickly (often aided by the unofficial handsignal of the signalman crossing his arms in an X shape as the driver drew past the box). And it would be pretty much unknown for the lie-by to be occupied, apart perhaps from a 'red card' knocked out of a previous train, so the set back could be done with some despatch.

Once loops became the norm, first in - first out would be the procedure, even if permissive working was allowed. In fact, the more so if permissive working was allowed; it would be a bit insane for a driver to set back on a permissive line unless special arrangements had been made to ensure nothing would be admitted behind him. If one train needs to overtake another whilst recessing, it would be run on to the next loop (by far the preferred option, especially if the driver was game to keep ahead on a tight margin), or the train being overtaken would be put somewhere else out of the way while it used the loop in the normal way.

I haven't got the tt to hand but what is 6J81? The siding at Tiverton is the former Redland roadstone siding and is unlikely to recess a full freight train but its more than reasonable to assume a short engineer working or OTM would use it.

Thought so. Looks like an OTM that uses the siding to stable.
