Good morning all,

I have a question with regards to train faults that I couldn't figure out myself so hoping someone here might know. I'm very new to SimSig and have played a little with Royston and Derby to get used to the way it all works but I've started a simulation with Portsmouth now.

I had a train with a fault stuck at Hilsea on the up line so it was blocking the line for about 20minutes. I had 2 services due through that area on the up but nothing on the down, is it possible for me to regulate the up trains on the down as emergency working even though its signalled in down direction only? I couldn't figure it out so I ended up with a queue of 3 trains at Hilsea.

Also another fault occurred at platform 1 Portsmouth & Southsea so it was blocking the exit from Portsmouth. As I didnt want to block the junction, I kept 2 trains in at Portsmouth even though they had trts, would that affect my performance score even though it's really down to the faulty train?

The short answer is, you done right by holding the trains at Portsmouth. No point dispatching a train that's gonna get stuck off a platform and No for wrong line working.
You have no way of crossing trains back over if you went wrong line working on the up/down mains at Hilsea. You just have to bare the delay out.

Well there is a procedure known as single line working which is able to be introduced in the case of a failed train blocking one line, but it's not something that you can just set up yourself, the area operations manager has to get involved, a pilotman has to be appointed, points may need to be secured, level crossing attendants in position, handsignallers in position. You can't just do it yourself and it would have to be quite the delay to be worth even looking into. In your case, it's difficult to imagine where you would be able to return trains to the proper line.

In short, that's not going to happen in the real world, and SimSig doesn't have much provision for it, although I suppose you could approximate it using the F2 train list if you were really minded to, but since you can't work the crossover at Cosham, I don't think you'd be able to do very much.

Now, this is out of scope for SimSig but...FWIW if the information provided by another simulation maker (which I shall not name here) is correct, there once existed a ground frame locked emergency crossover at Portcreek Junction in rear of the double junction on the lines from Portsmouth, which could have been useful in this occasion.

This does beg the question as of whether anything would have been different with that emergency crossover in place, but I guess the answer would not have been any different.

Edit: Oh and I wouldn't mind the performance scores too much, since AFAIK you'd have to underwrite any and all delay for any reason from an overly optimistic timetable, to the wrong kind of food cart, to the inevitable points failure somewhere really inconvenient, at least right now.

In the real world there's absolutely no way that would even be considered for a 20 minute delay, due to the massive safety risk of putting a train on a track where there are no signals in its direction of travel. It can be done with a lot of planning and personnel, as described above, but not for a minor delay like that.

In Simsig, you can definitely try new things, and trying new things is the best way to learn. You will want to plan the move, though. Where is it going to go back to the correct line, where are you going to stop trains on the other line while you do your move, etc.

In real life it would normally take more than 20 mins to get a ground frame operator out there.

As for the points scoring in Simsig, quite often getting a high score conflicts with what would be done in real life to keep things moving so I go with the latter.
